Position Summary
Role Summary
The Senior Associate plays a central role in managing client relationships and overseeing the full lifecycle of commercial mortgage transactions. Unlike traditional origination roles, this position does not require cold calling or outbound business development. Instead, the Senior Associate is accountable for maintaining and deepening existing client relationships, ensuring best-in-class execution, and serving as the primary point of contact for borrowers, investors, and internal stakeholders.
The individual will report directly to the Managing Director and will be responsible for managing both front-end transaction execution and ongoing portfolio management.
Key Responsibilities
Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for an assigned portfolio of clients (developers, property owners, investors).
- Act as the first point of contact for client inquiries, ensuring timely, professional, and proactive communication.
- Build long-term trust with clients by anticipating needs, identifying opportunities for value-add, and delivering consistent service.
- Represent Cameron Stephens at client meetings, site visits, and industry events, strengthening the firm’s market presence.
Deal Execution & Structuring
- Lead intake of new transactions, prepare financial models, and provide recommendations.
- Structure transactions in collaboration with senior leadership, preparing LOIs, term sheets, and ICC materials.
- Negotiate deal terms directly with clients and guide them through documentation and approvals.
- Liaise with investors and Credit to address questions and ensure smooth approvals.
Underwriting & Due Diligence
- Conduct market research, borrower due diligence, and KYC in compliance with AML legislation.
- Finalize underwriting models and prepare comprehensive Loan Summaries.
- Coordinate with legal counsel, brokers, and internal teams to ensure timely closings.
Documentation & Funding
- Oversee Commitment Letters, Funding Packages, and closing documentation.
- Track revisions, approvals, and client sign-off with precision.
- Proactively identify and resolve issues that may impact funding.
Portfolio & Account Management
- Manage an active loan portfolio post-funding, including covenant compliance, DSCR monitoring, and borrower updates.
- Prepare annual reviews, quarterly account management reports, and amendment/extension requests.
- Maintain Salesforce and internal systems with complete accuracy.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor junior associates as required, providing guidance on underwriting and relationship management.
- Collaborate across Credit, Syndication and Funding to ensure seamless deal flow.
- Provide feedback to senior leadership on client trends, risks, and market dynamics.
Qualifications
- 5–8 years of experience in commercial real estate lending, investment, or development.
- Strong financial modeling and underwriting skills in real estate finance.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships with professionalism and integrity.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple complex transactions simultaneously.
- Ability to manage multiple deals concurrently and meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional judgment and client-first mindset.
- Attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracy.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Salesforce.
- Post-secondary degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or Real Estate. CFA, FRM, or MBA an asset.
