Senior Design Engineer
About the role
JOB OVERVIEW
The Senior Highway Design Engineer is a senior water resources engineering specialist responsible for the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of drainage, hydrology, hydraulic, and climate resilience solutions for British Columbia's transportation network. The position provides expert engineering advice on culverts, roadside drainage systems, stream protection works, erosion mitigation, flood management, river engineering, coastal engineering, and other water-related infrastructure affecting provincial highways. The role also provides technical expertise in piped drainage systems, water distribution infrastructure, and sanitary sewer systems as part of development reviews, utility coordination, and multidisciplinary transportation projects. The position serves as the Ministry's water resources engineering representative on projects ranging from routine maintenance and operational improvements to major capital and emergency response initiatives.
The position leads or supports the delivery of engineering projects through a combination of in-house design and analysis and oversight of consultant-led assignments. Responsibilities include hydrologic and hydraulic assessments, scour and erosion protection design, drainage design, climate resilience and risk assessments, development of standards, guidelines, and technical practices, review of engineering submissions and consultant deliverables, and provision of specialist advice to Ministry staff, local governments, consultants, developers, and other partners. The role requires sound engineering judgement to develop flexible, practical, site-specific engineering solutions that balance risk, uncertainty, constructability, environmental considerations, operational requirements, partner and client needs, and project objectives while adapting to evolving information and changing conditions.
The position works collaboratively with multidisciplinary planning and project teams to support the long-term development of regional and provincial transportation corridors by integrating water resources engineering, climate resilience, and natural hazard considerations into project planning and decision making. The position also plays a key role in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery for highway infrastructure affected by flooding, debris flows, landslides, wildfires, glacial lake outburst floods, and other natural hazards. The role provides engineering guidance to highway operations, supports emergency decision-making, leads damage and risk assessments, and develops temporary and permanent infrastructure solutions to restore critical transportation corridors and protect public safety.
The team has been instrumental in the Ministry's response to significant events including the 2021 atmospheric river, wildfire-related highway impacts, the 2024 Chilcotin River landslide, glacial outburst flood events, and subsequent flood recovery and resilience initiatives. Through this work, the position contributes to strengthening the long-term resilience and adaptability of British Columbia's transportation system in the face of a changing climate.
