The Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Senior Media Technician.
The position reports to the Manager Com/Media and involves medium-high volume, highly variable workloads. It requires dealing with a range of routine to complex problems simultaneously, with high stress demands during term start-ups. The role includes mentoring, coordinating, and reviewing the work of Media Technicians in the operation of equipment and systems. Decisions made in this position affect one-time, unrepeatable events on and off campus for academics, students, staff, and external clients. The individual is responsible for the timely and error-free delivery of audio-visual services to the campus community. Additionally, the role involves consulting on events requiring audio/visual services for campus and external clients, and then implementing the plan. This role does not support a work-from-home policy, emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration. There may also be a requirement for after-hours work, depending on the nature of the tasks at hand.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Accurately enter customer requests into the Com/Media booking system
- Process work orders with precision and completeness
- Maintain accurate inventories of equipment in depots and rooms
- Keep precise track of media equipment locations
- Plan activities for the following day
- Maintain accurate records
- Effectively handle and schedule special events and conference bookings
- Enter booking requests into the Com/Media booking system from Service Now tickets
- Provide advanced equipment instruction, demonstration and consultation to customers
- Computer support under direction of in-house System Administrator
- Complete paperwork (orders, timesheets, etc.) in a timely manner
- Handling Trouble Calls as they come in
- Organize and prioritize incoming tasks while managing competing priorities
- Follow standard procedures for tracking and escalating incidents.
- Understand clients' requirements and ensure they are informed and updated on related work
- May be responsible for pricing and billing of orders
- May be required to handle financial transactions and follow the University's money handling processes and PCI compliance processes
- Maintain accurate records of all work using designated tools
- As a media technical expert, proficient in supporting live and special events, responsible for:
- Distribution, set-up, operation, and teardown of complex audio-visual set-ups, which may include single or multi-camera video recording, video streaming, multi-channel digital audio equipment, multi-room or large conference set-ups, video conferencing co-ordination and testing, and video editing
- Instruct clients on how to use our equipment properly
- Ensure prompt and effective resolution of technical issues, either independently or through collaboration
- Efficiently deliver, set up, and return equipment to designated areas as per activity sheets
- Operate and maintain equipment to ensure optimal customer service
- Address complex issues using independent judgment and implement practical solutions
- Comprehend and comply with all policies of the Faculty, IT, and the University of Calgary
- Relationships/Collaboration
- Provide unbiased and accurate information to the Media Services Supervisor regarding personnel decisions
- Offer effective consultation to the University and external clients on events utilizing audio/visual technology services on and off campus
- Positively and dynamically represent the University of Calgary at various events and conferences
- Provide effective leadership and support to classroom support staff
- Create and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders
- Ask questions, provide suggestions, and offer support and training where appropriate
- May support the Team Lead with day to day staff scheduling
- Involve the Manager Comm/Media or other team members as needed
- Effectively address complex issues using independent judgment and initiate practical solutions
- Proactively implement or introduce innovative approaches to IT problems and client requests to the team
- Adjust to evolving challenges and responsibilities as the unit's structure changes
- Provide support outside of scheduled hours as needed
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Completion of technical school training in a certificate program (e.g., Avixa CTS) or relevant trade qualifications, along with related experience
- A minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience is required; a combination of education and experience will be considered
- Minimum of 4-5 years working AV support for live events or equivalent education or credentials
- Minimum 3-5 years of proficiency in operating video camera carts, analog audio mixers, single-camera recordings
- Experience in the educational media field (significant experience in audio/visual field)
- Completion of technical school training or relevant trade qualifications, and related experience
- All Phase 2 staff should complete the Avixa Certified Technology Specialist courses and test within a year of being hired into a Phase 2 position
- All Phase 2 staff should complete the Avixa CTS credential within three years of being hired into a Phase 2 position
- Strong skills in technical training
- Strong leadership skills
- Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to plan and coordinate complex event setups both on and off campus, including troubleshooting issues under stressful circumstances
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Knowledge of university culture and structure as it relates to providing superior services
- A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required)
- Technical Knowledge:

- Digital Video Editing
- Video conferencing software such as:
- Zoom
- Live Stream Studio
- Teams
- Yuja
- Microsoft and Mac operating systems
- Proficiency and some experience in:
- Video Camera Carts: Proficient in operating video camera carts for recording events, interviews, or training sessions when needed
- Analog Audio Mixers: Proficient in handling multi-channel analog audio mixers during live events or studio recordings as occasional tasks
- Single-Camera Recordings: Proficient in managing single-camera setups for recording lectures, interviews, or promotional content on an as-needed basis
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks
- Oversee special events operations and may provide support in managing the schedules of media technicians
- Strong client relations skills, with the ability to provide support via telephone, email, remote software tools, and in-person
- Ability to translate technical information for clients with little or no technical background, and to translate customer needs into service requests
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Creativity and initiative to generate improvements and foster positive outcomes
- Ability to perform manual labor (e.g., lifting) related to equipment
- Flexibility to accommodate events that may occur outside of regular hours
- Must have a valid driver's license and experience driving a large truck
