SUMMARY

The Product Manager, Trade Lane Development (TLM) is responsible for driving profitable growth and competitive positioning on assigned ocean freight trade lanes. This role combines procurement leadership with commercial strategy, ensuring that carrier capacity, pricing, and service levels are aligned with sales and operational objectives.

The TLM owns the trade lane business plan, including procurement, capacity management, customer development, and profitability. Acting as the primary commercial and procurement lead, the TLM partners with carriers, Sales, Operations, and overseas counterparts to deliver volume, gross profit, and customer satisfaction targets.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Propose and agree on objectives and strategies for respective trade lane market development.

  • Co own master trade lane business plans in alignment with overseas counterparts and Canada’s Trade Lane Management team.

  • Lead procurement activities for assigned trade lanes, securing competitive rates and reliable carrier services.

  • Negotiate allocation, space, and carrier agreements in line with DSV’s global strategy and approved guidelines.

  • Responsible for achieving annual trade lane targets: volume, gross profit, and win ratio.

  • Serve as the primary trade lane sales contact; grow DSV’s market share on assigned trade lanes.

  • Identify and prioritize accounts based on targeted commodities and lane segments.

  • Promote and market DSV’s ocean freight services to/from assigned trade lanes in alignment with the local sales organization.

  • Organize and support product training for Sales and Operations.

  • Support and act as escalation point for branch level operations on commercial and carrier related issues which cannot be solved through local escalation.

  • Provide and disseminate market intelligence (rates, capacity, competitor activity, regulatory updates) to stakeholders.

  • Coordinate trade lane pricing policies with branches to support competitive market positioning.

  • Conduct pricing reviews with Tender/Pricing Management for all applicable trade lane tenders.

  • Manage cargo steering for assigned trade lanes, ensuring alignment with carrier commitments and profitability.

  • Monitor trade lane performance (TEU, CBM, gross profit, win ratio) and service activities; recommend improvements or corrective actions.

  • Provide quarterly feedback to management on trade lane performance and outlook for the next quarter.

  • Cultivate overseas trade lane development partnerships to align business opportunities and customer solutions.

Quality, Health & Safety:

  • Support organizational commitment to ISO 9001, ISO 45001 certification.
  • Perform assigned tasks to support DSV’s objectives and targets regarding quality, health, safety, and environment and follow all requirements as set out in the DSV Quality Health Safety Environment policy.
  • Ensure that day to day activities embrace sustainability and safety, reducing environmental impact, supporting communities, and minimizing workplace incidents.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • A college certificate or degree in international trade, transportation, logistics, or a related field is beneficial.
  • Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in logistics and transportation, with at least 5 years in ocean operations, pricing/procurement, tradelane management, or product development.
  • Proven experience negotiating carrier contracts and delivering profitable trade lane growth.

Possession of certifications such as CIFFA (Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association) can be an asset. Other relevant
certifications in transportation and logistics may also be valued.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of ocean freight procurement, logistics, and supply chain management.

  • Excellent negotiation, influencing, and communication skills for dealing with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

  • Ability to analyze data and make strategic, profitability focused decisions to optimize trade lane operations.

  • Familiarity with international trade regulations, carrier agreements, and compliance requirements.

  • Leadership qualities to effectively align cross functional teams and drive performance.

  • Ability to adapt to changing market conditions, industry trends, and regulatory environments.

  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in the industry.

  • Willingness to travel, if necessary, to engage with carriers, clients, and overseas partners.

Language and Computer Skills

  • English is the principal language for this position; additional languages may be required depending on assigned trade lanes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a diverse multicultural environment.

  • Microsoft Office suite.

  • CargoWise experience, an asset.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting and standing at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Regular working hours apply for this position, at times, working beyond these hours may be required by business needs.
