Overview
Working under the supervision of Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Dr. Christopher Mushquash, and with a national interdisciplinary team, the Senior Research Project Coordinator will contribute to the long-term goal of a research project titled: Weaving Indigenous Community-led and Interdisciplinary Research to Develop Culturally-Safer Wholistic Brain Health Assessment. The goal of this research is to decolonize brain health assessment in Indigenous communities and support Indigenous centred brain health assessment, education, training for healthcare providers, and supportive care. Working with the concept of building a “Bundle”, which, for many Indigenous Peoples, is a sacred set of items and medicines that an individual has gathered and that they care for, the project team aims to create a Bundle that contains assessment tools, training materials, and guidance that a community can use to address rising rates of dementia. Funded through the New Frontiers Research Fund - Transformation Grant, this position will support the Dilico Anishinabek Family Care (Dilico) site co-leads Dr. Christopher Mushquash and PhD student Brittany Skov in all aspects of the project.
The Senior Project Coordinator will participate in research-related tasks to support all background research required for the project, assist with the development of an action plan for the Dilico site team, ethics proposals, surveys, interview guides, policies, and protocols, in addition to supporting the research team and our Dilico partners. Once all necessary research supports are put into place, the Coordinator will then assist with the recruitment process for study participants (including coordinating study posters and flyers, interacting with the community at local events, etc). The Coordinator will also assist with data collection (interviews, circles, surveys, assessments), coordinate interviews and meetings with participants, coordinate space rentals and catering, handle all travel arrangements for participants and the study team, assist with qualitative data analysis, data management, and data processing (including reviewing transcripts for accuracy). The Coordinator will also contribute to project dissemination activities, including but not limited to preparing manuscripts and reports for Dilico.
In addition to this important project, the Coordinator will also provide some administrative assistance to the national research program funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) called the ACCESS Open Minds Integrated Youth Services, Indigenous Network. This program focuses on enhancing mental health and wellness among Indigenous young people and is co-led by Dr. Mushquash and Dr. Srividya Iyer (McGill University). As part of this team, the Coordinator will assist with various aspects of the research program, including but not limited to funding applications, ethics applications, study protocols, and final reporting.
