Senior Software Technical Specialist

As a Senior Software Technical Specialist, you will lead the design, development, and testing of high-complexity components of operationally or safety-critical software systems. You are an expert in one or more functional areas of a subsystem and will specify, design, analyze, develop, and integrate changes to software applications under the direction of the Chief Software Architect, adhering to the development process for safety-critical software. Additional responsibilities include contributing to estimates for tendering processes, performance studies, and supporting safety verification and validation activities.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Understands the customer’s needs and through-life cycle concerns using advanced studies, simulations, models, prototypes, etc.
  • Formalizes the mission/function description, architectural and algorithms design, and the refinement of functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Drives solution consistency with architecture and design patterns for all modifications in areas of ownership.
  • Decomposes and derives detailed software requirements.
  • Produces detailed impact analyses across software components.
  • Designs, codes, debugs, writes test procedures, and tests software code; chairs design reviews for components of high complexity or cross-cutting changes.
  • Reviews code, test procedures, and test results.
  • Produces and executes complex integration tests on simulated or target hardware test benches.
  • Identifies root causes and implements corrections for defect reports.
  • Supports investigations of defects across multiple subsystems.
  • Performs engineering testing in the field and investigates field problems.
  • Provides inputs for cost estimates within areas of expertise.
  • Assists the Functional Manager in providing training, leadership, and motivation to other team members.
  • Contributes to co-engineering activities with Systems Engineering to ensure system-software consistency and compliance with software architecture.
  • Scales solutions to project phases, balancing budget and technical risk while indicating risks to the Work Package Manager.
  • Performs planning and coordination activities in support of Work Package Management (WPM) within technical domains.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience:

    • 10+ years in URS Systems and Software Design, Development, Integration, Testing, and/or Deployment.
    • Expert-level experience in developing mission-critical or near real-time systems.
    • 3+ years of Test Automation experience.
    • 1+ years of working with AI frameworks such as LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude).
  • Technical Skills:

    • Expert knowledge of railway signaling techniques, SelTrac CBTC, and requirements engineering.
    • Strong understanding of software development processes, including Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
    • Advanced programming with C++ (including templates, STL, Boost, MFC), C# with WPF, and scripting languages like Perl, Ruby, and others.
    • Practical experience with Angular, Typescript, WebSockets, Java-based backends, and software building tools (gmake, MSBuild).
    • Familiarity with object-oriented techniques, multithreading, socket programming, General Windows Programming.
    • Knowledgeable in secure coding practices (e.g., CERT rules).
  • Education and Certifications:

    • Professional Engineer certification (P.Eng) preferred.
  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
    • Leadership and mentoring abilities, capable of motivating team members.
  • Tools:

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, source control systems, and management tools (Eclipse, Jira, Git, ClearCase, ClearQuest, DOORS, etc.).
  • Other Technical Competencies:

    • Understanding control theories (e.g., PID, Fuzzy Logic), graph theory, and modeling simulations.
    • Programming across multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, Unix).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer - P.Eng certification.
