About the role

Job Summary Reporting to the Print Supervisor, the Plating Technician provides the interface between the Prepress Department and the Press. Files and impositions generated by the Prepress Department must be proofed/verified so that plates can be accurately prepared in compliance with job specifications and company quality standards. Works closely with other staff members to meet or exceed customer satisfaction and service.

Role As a Plating Technician and a member of the Prepress Team, you are accountable for meeting the department production and quality goals, as well as playing a key role in meeting company-wide profitability and customer satisfaction goals:

Since you are in contact with customers, you are in a key position for guaranteeing their satisfaction. This position requires confidentiality, tact, sensitivity, and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

General and Administrative

  • Coordinate with the Production Team and the Prepress team to produce and prioritize jobs, and when necessary reorganize to meet deadline changes and updates.
  • Comply with all OHSA safety requirements.
  • Participate as a key player in the company by supporting operations as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with the Print Supervisor, the Production Team and the Prepress Team, informing and updating them regularly to guarantee that company objectives and customer objectives are met.
  • Follow systems and procedures outlined in the company Procedure Manual.

Plating Operations

  • Operate all equipment in accordance with operating instructions.
  • Receive and output files electronically from the WIP server.
  • Prepare/review files for output to plate.
  • Output files to image setter and other press-specific settings.
  • Verify Marked changes on proofs have been completed and are correct.
  • Operate image setter.
  • Process material through processor and punch plates.
  • Produce and proof all plates, making Dylux mock-up proofs as needed.
  • Perform paste-up and book imposition as necessary.
  • Perform quality controls on the assigned machine/ equipment.
  • Troubleshoot breakdowns, conduct minor repairs, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Control and adjust machine settings when required.
  • Conduct weekly and regular maintenance on all equipment in the department.
  • Responsible for cleaning and machine setup of assigned equipment/machine.
  • Maintain knowledge of safety equipment for your job and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment and Supplies

  • Clean and maintain equipment and work area following maintenance procedures, and update maintenance logs.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of graphics supplies; order and stock supplies as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintain image setter and processors – changing media and chemistry, order supplies.
  • Inform supervisor of equipment problems.
  • Perform routine computer maintenance, including software updates and utility programs.

Key Experience & Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED with experience or vocational/technical certification.
  • Previous print knowledge/experience is an asset.
  • Ability to prepare files for output to plate (spot and 4-color process), receive and manipulate files electronically within proprietary operating systems is an asset.
  • Knowledge of printing terminology and practices is an asset.
  • Experience in paste-up and book imposition is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills e.g. working well with others, communication, positive attitude.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good written, verbal and mathematical skills.
