ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERT
MAIN FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the LHS Director of Operations, the Environmental Expert will play a central role in the development and implementation of our environmental initiatives. The Environmental Expert will be responsible for analyzing the performance of biotreatment processes as well as the environmental impact of operations across LHS’s three manufacturing sites in Quebec. He or she will propose improvements to reduce our industrial footprint, while adhering to best practices in productivity, quality, and safety.
Responsibilities
Monitoring of Effluent Management Performance
- Provide daily operational recommendations based on routine analyses to optimize effluent treatment (e.g., bioreactor feed scheduling, transfers to external treatment).
- Monitor facility performance using daily-updated indicators to predict process behavior, anticipate required adjustments, and support future production needs.
- Collaborate with Planning and Operations teams to link production sequences with treatment system performance.
Environmental Analysis and Optimization
- Calculate monthly environmental performance indicators for the three LHS sites (energy consumption, waste generation per unit produced).
- Conduct internal and external benchmarking to identify improvement opportunities and present findings to Plant Management and Operations leadership.
- Identify, test, and recommend, in collaboration with Engineering and Operations, investments aimed at improving plant performance or effluent treatment efficiency.
- Develop an annual action plan to reduce the environmental footprint of the three sites; monitor progress and report on results.
- Organize the ISO 14001 Gap Analysis for the three sites and prepare the action plan leading to multisite certification in 2026.
- Prepare and submit Lallemand’s corporate ESG indicators.
Collaboration and Documentation

Develop a collaborative network with the Saint-Simon plant (LHS France) and other business units to share best practices and lessons learned.

Draft procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation required for this scope of activities.

TECHNICAL SKILLS
Required
- Master’s degree in environmental engineering or a related field
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in sustainability, preferably in the agri-food or biotechnology sector
- Strong data analysis skills (advanced Excel or equivalent tools) and ability to interpret chemical and microbiological results
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes (ideally biological systems)
