Hours: Wednesdays at 9:00 am to 12:00 pm noon

Job Summary

In this position, you will plan, organize and instruct pre-school programs for participants from ages 2 to 5 years. You will also be responsible for ensuring a positive and safe environment for participants and peers at the community centres

Job Duties

  • Facilitates, leads and supervises the program
  • Organizes and writes lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program
  • Develops lesson plans specific to the abilities of the assigned preschoolers. Reviews lesson plans with the Recreation Supervisor/ Program Coordinator prior to class and submits at the end of each session
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining an inventory of supplies, reporting to the Program Coordinator/ Recreation Supervisor any items needing replacement
  • Keeps attendance records and checks with participants who have extended absences. Gives all new participant names that are not on the list to the Program Coordinator/ Recreation Supervisor
  • Checks and ensures all participant emergency and medical information is obtained through the completion of a personal data form on the participants’ first day
  • Ensures all program participants are aware of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations
  • Meets with parents (if needed) prior to, or after class time
  • Directly guides volunteers and part time Program Assistants as required
  • Advises Program Coordinator/ Recreation Supervisor of any customer service issues, complaints or inquires
  • Ensures safety at ALL times, enforcing safety regulations as set out by the City of Markham policies and procedures
  • Escorts pre-school children to the washroom or change room, ensuring that preschool children are never left in the sole attendance of a volunteer
  • Adheres to the principles of Healthy Child Development
  • Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications & Competencies

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age prior to start of employment.
  • Successful completion of early childhood development courses at the high school or college/university level is preferred
  • Minimum 2 years combined previous experience working with children in a preschool environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with pre-school children ages 2 to 5
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Thorough understanding of basic principles of early childhood development
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons in a courteous and efficient manner
  • Good interpersonal skills suitable for working with preschool children including a patient and nurturing style
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good computer skills (MS Office) and ability to learn new software
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ and HIGH FIVE – Principles of healthy child development
