Position Description

Mercer Celgar is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Operational Excellence Team as a Process Engineer.

Reporting to Manager, Operational Excellence the Process Engineer is responsible for providing technical and engineering expertise to the Operations and Maintenance departments in order to support the mill’s safety, environmental, cost, quality and reliability performance objectives.

Core Responsibilities

  • Monitor, evaluate, document, and communicate process performance against key process indicators (KPIs)
  • Problem solve and troubleshoot operational problems involving process design, equipment, materials, and procedures
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate process engineering trials and OpEx projects with a focus on materials and energy use efficiency and environmental sustainability
  • Conduct root-cause and corrective action investigations into incidents which resulted in significant business impacts (e.g. loss of production or off-quality product)
  • Conduct formal risk assessments such as process hazard analysis (PHA), HAZOP, what-if analysis, and layer of protection analysis (LOPA) to mitigate risks when process changes are planned
  • Identify, develop, and provide technical leadership for capital engineering, operations, and maintenance departments
    Develop and maintain mass and energy balances for plant processes
  • Act as a key resource and leader in supporting the mill's Process Safety Management (PSM) program
  • Follow the Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) regulations
  • Supervise professional engineering work that is assigned to an Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Other relevant duties, projects, and tasks as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering) Degree with a preference for chemical engineering
  • 5-7 years demonstrated industry experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience with structured problem solving methodologies such as lean manufacturing and six sigma
  • Experience with Process Safety Management
  • Ability to work effectively across organisational boundaries
  • Strong data analysis and visualization ability
  • Experience with industrial data systems and software such as PI Historian/PI AF, Minitab, Aspen HYSYS, or other process simulation software is a strong asset
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong technical leadership and mentoring skills
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with EGBC as a P.Eng or E.I.T.

Salary

The salary for this position is $91,500.00 - 137,000.00. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
