Scope
The Park Development Services team ensures Surrey¿s built environment supports a healthy ecosystem while serving the needs of our residents. We are seeking a new Park Technician to add to our team - an individual with customer service skills, and a passion for protecting and enhancing Surrey¿s urban forest and sensitive ecosystems, while supporting Surrey¿s biodiversity. This position will serve as the key contact for land development projects, ensuring projects meet park requirements, and will also assist in the development of new parks and new park assets.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Park Development Services Manager, this position will play a crucial role in planning, developing, protecting and maintaining the City¿s extensive park system. The successful candidate will be responsible to:
Liaise with urban planners, engineering staff, contractors and developers regarding park interests and requirements on land development projects
Review and provide comments on development plans and drawings, including civil drawings, arborist reports, environmental reports, and landscape drawings
Attend site meetings and complete inspections of land development projects to ensure park requirements are being met
Assist with planning, design, procurement and execution of a variety of park development projects
Prepare and execute restoration or treatment plans for upgrades to parkland
Develop cost estimates and other technical reports
Coordinate and supervise work of contractors and crews related to parkland upgrades
Perform Tree Risk Assessments
Manage programs and projects within approved budgets
Perform site inspections and reports for Realty Division prior to parkland acquisition
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with demonstrated knowledge of park operations, landscape design & construction and/or riparian restoration and staff supervision. Experience with project coordination and ability to read construction drawings are considerable assets. Our ideal candidate is an analytical problem-solver with excellent communication skills; maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and the ability to address issues with diplomacy and tact are crucial aspects of this role.
Applicants should have ISA arborist certification, or be eligible to apply for certification.
In addition, candidates must meet one of the following:
Completion of a Diploma program from a recognized post-secondary institution with a focus on Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or Civil Engineering, with a minimum of three years related experience, OR
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a Horticultural Trades Qualification, supplemented by three years of related progressive experience, OR
Completion of Grade 12 and a Horticultural Technical Certificate Program (one year full-time) from a recognized post-secondary institution, with a focus on Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or Civil Engineering, with additional related academic courses and training including at least one credit course in each of supervision and technical writing, supplemented by four years of related progressive experience.
An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
