Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Transitional Housing Case worker will work with the Residents of Grace Mansion in all areas of personal development and growth, life skills, and social and spiritual activities to enable the Resident to attain their full potential.
Accountabilities:
Casework
- Conduct orientation with clients and review the facility rules, clients’ rights and responsibilities, grievance/complaint.
- Develop effective working relations and cooperate with other service providers in the community throughout the entire case management process.
- Provide hands-on training, coaching and support to clients, and help create opportunities for practicing skills that will enable clients to achieve their personal goals.
- Conduct an initial needs assessment of the resident within 10 days of arrival to the residence and schedule the initial room inspection.
- Establish and refer clients to appropriate medical and mental health services, education/job training programs, legal and advocacy services and other community resources as needed.
- Ensure the eventual completion of the goals and prepare an appropriate exit plan
- Research and develop knowledge of issues that relate to residents. Development of resource information as relevant for residents.
- Work with assigned residents in completing Personal Development Plan (PDP) and, following up with residents at regular intervals to assess, monitor, and adjust PDP as may be required.
- Maintain contact with the Salvation Army as well as City, and Provincial Government and community agencies to coordinate activities and available resources for the benefit of the Centre and the residents.
Admin/Community Support
- Supervise/monitor actions and interactions of Residents during assigned shift.
- Respond to all Resident inquiries within the framework of Centre Policies & Procedures.
- Answer telephone and refer calls to the appropriate person(s).
- Admit visitors to the Centre according to guidelines.
- Participate with Residents in scheduled instructional, spiritual, or social activities as required.
- Participate in scheduled staff and case management meetings as required and provide input and information on assigned Client progress.
- Maintain confidentiality and keep accurate files and statistical records. Specifics of administrative duties will vary with the different shifts.
- Receive/explain applications for potential residents, along with updating the waitlist.
- Assist with the intake process and departure process of residents.
- Receive residents' rent and place funds in the designated lockbox as per written protocol.
- Initial response to emergencies such as fire alarm, or other situations.
- Respond and assist residents at times of physical/mental/emotional crises.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Oral and written communication between this position and other team members on shift and across all shifts is a significant priority in this position. Those team members include, but are not limited to:

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- Reports directly to: Program Manager
- No direct reports to this position
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Receive Residents' rent and place funds in the designated lockbox as per written protocol.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Duties require the employee to work in Grace Mansion – an 84-room, four-storey Residence located at 596 East Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver. Responsibilities will involve working from a designated workstation, but will also involve movement through the residential areas, and general building. The employee may at times be subject to hazardous or disagreeable conditions in the performance of their duties.
The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.
education and experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years
- Training/Certification in Addictions and/or Mental Health issues
- Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
- Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or willingness to be trained.
- WHMIS 2015
- Certification in FOODSAFE Level 1
- Universal precautions
- Computer skills and training in Word, Outlook & Excel
- Fluent spoken and written English
- Criminal Record Review Act clearance to work with vulnerable adults
Alternative combination of education and experience might be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of two (2) years of working with individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in a residential setting is preferred but applicable experience will also be considered.
Skills and Capabilities (examples provided below):
- Organized with good attention to detail.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to de-escalate individuals in stressful situations
- Quality oral and written communication skills
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $22.92 to $28.64 with a maximum of $34.37.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
