Director of Warehouse Operations
About the role
Overview The Director of Warehouse Operations will oversee our four (4) distribution facilities located in Western Canada (Alberta & British Columbia). This individual will coordinate all regional administrative functions and enforces corporate policy, procedures and operating systems for Regional Operations Management team. The Key accountabilities for this role include: Leadership, People Management and Development, Client Relations, Process Management and Optimization, Communication and Information Sharing, and Resource and Asset Management. This position reports directly to the Regional Vice President.
Responsibilities Operations Management
- Creates production standards for teams, plan headcount needs based on labor cost and budget management.
- Will work collaboratively with internal leadership and team members to meet and exceed operational goals and key performance indicators (safety, productivity, service quality)
- Liaison with our Corporate Support Teams (HR/ Safety, Purchasing, Facilities, Loss Prevention, Finance) when required to ensure adherence to established procedures and guidelines.
- Leverage the resources available within our Solutions and Distribution Support Services teams to help build a culture focused on continuous improvement
- Build collaborative relationships with our client contacts and establish an effective communication framework to support the on-going sharing of information between the parties.
- Actively participate in new business pursuits (RFP’s, sales presentations and conducting DC tours)
- Occasional duties will include sales calls when administration of the account is an issue at the discretion of the Regional Vice President.
- Develops and coordinates special events within the region.
- Travels to other warehouses and participates in department or company meetings, as necessary.
Financials Management
- Responsible for the regional budget and for reviewing monthly aging and other reports, reporting on any key variances and relevant action items.
- Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budgets for each site within region.
- Review and approve various forecasts.
- Reviews of regional accounts receivables.
- Work with the engineering team to develop a pricing model for new client opportunities.
- Maintenance of lease and customer files at the regional level.
- Partners with Sales to reprice existing business at contract renewal.
Employee Relations/Development
- Responsible for the management of all warehouse operations and staff in the region.
- Ensure continued training and cross training of all personnel within the region.
- Will recruit, hire and mentor management positions.
- Provides regular coaching and feedback on performance, prepares and presents formal performance appraisals and makes recommendations and approves annual compensation increases.
- Manages and maintains good human resources practices with direct reports, and adherence to established corporate and department policies and procedures
- Works with Human Resources to resolve employee relation issues, discipline actions, problem resolution and terminations.
- Provides feedback, coaching, guidance, and recognition to enhance development of the team's skills and capabilities
- Plays an active role in employee development and talent selection.
- Acts as a role model for the department in support of corporate purpose, vision, and values.
- Exhibits a commitment to self-development by staying current on industry trends, tools, and systems.
Safety and Security Management
- Conducts facility audits, oversees the administration, and supplies necessary training throughout the region.
- Work with corporate and local vendors to acquire and maintain all material handling equipment, storage, conveyors and related assets.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics or Engineering preferred.
- At least 10 years of managerial and operations experience in high volume distribution environment.
- At Least 5 years managing a multi-site logistics and supply chain distribution network and managing hourly employees.
- Solid understanding of distribution/fulfillment processes and systems within a multi-channel (wholesale, retail, e-commerce) operation.
- Proven ability to measure and perform against internal expectations, industry standards, WMS systems, equipment, and safety related programs.
- Computer applications using MS office specifically access, Excel and Power Point, internet search engine capabilities, T-Logic and warehouse operating systems
- Very strong analytical and communication skills.
- Experience with design and layout of distribution facilities and best-in-class operations.
- Performed and or led continuous improvement projects in the area of Lean and/or Six Sigma.
- Previous experience with a Manhattan WMS environment (SCALE, ACTIVE, PKMS) is an asset.
- Working knowledge in a cross dock, pick n pack, kitting and sales environment preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, HAZMAT regulations and the willingness to become certified in one or more of these areas as necessary.
- Working knowledge of warehouse / mechanical equipment.
Other
- Must be able to work in varying facility conditions.
- Must be on-call for alarm systems or problems during off work hours.
- Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time to various company sites, customer locations, and industry events.
- Ability and availability to work irregular or extended hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed by the customer or business.
- Must be able to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours.
- Lift and move totes up to 50 pounds.
- Regular bending, lifting, stretching and reaching both below the waist and above the head.
- Walking in the distribution center and around the area with great frequency; facilities are over a quarter mile in length.
- Should be able to work in environments with variable noise levels, lighting conditions and temperature variation and able to access all areas of building without limitations.
We are excited to share the base salary range for this position is $170,000.00 - $180,000.00. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, targeted at 25%.
