What you'll be doing

Global Operational Risk Management (GORM) provides oversight of CIBC’s operational risk exposures through the Operational Risk Management and Control Frameworks, including risks related to Anti-Money Laundering, Business Interruption, Data, Financial Reporting, Information Security, Legal, Loss or Damage to Assets, Models, People, Privacy, Product, Project, Regulatory Compliance, Third Parties, Technology, Theft, Fraud and Unauthorized Activity, and Transaction Processing.

The Director, Operational Risk Management reports to the Senior Director, Operational Risk Management and provides independent challenge and proactive oversight and assessment of operational risk issues within the assigned TI&I lines of business. As second line of defense, you are responsible for all aspects of operational risk management and control framework requirements including the identification, measurement, management, monitoring and control of operational risk. As the Director, you'll build strong partnerships with the Infrastructure and risk partners across CIBC to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to managing risk.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

How you'll succeed

  • Communicate effectively – Demonstrate clarity of thought in both written and verbal communications. You develop and deliver strong reporting content, presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees up to and including the Board.
  • Build strong partnerships – Build and sustain strong working relationships where you are viewed as a valued partner that offers sound and pragmatic guidance, demonstrates a deep understanding of their environment and context and facilitates productive risk discussions and outcomes. You closely track status of key initiatives and programs to clearly understand, challenge and influence program objectives to ensure objectives are met and risk is reduced.
  • Independent challenge – Challenge the business lines’ operational and control assessments and recommendations, including the review of operational incidents, change initiatives, and risk & control self-assessments. As a second line of defense for the management of operational risk, this role requires a deep understanding of assigned businesses as well as the ability to challenge senior employees of the Bank in a constructive manner.
  • Proactive oversight and assessment – Review operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies and other relevant information to form an independent view of operational risks. Identify material and emerging risks through proactive risk reviews and monitoring of Key Risk Indicators and External Events. Effectively communicate areas or concern to ensure appropriate risk mitigation actions are taken.
  • Facilitate innovation – Support change and the maintenance of effective Operational Risk programs that allows CIBC to fulfill its purpose-driven mission. This will include new ideas that supports CIBC’s goal of an effective, efficient and radically simple Operational Risk and Control program.

Who you are

  • You can demonstrate experience in Operational Risk Management within the banking sector, with a deep understanding of the Canadian regulatory environment and the risks and issues relevant to our market, obtained through a minimum of 10 years working in a financial institution. It’s an asset if you possess experience working in or closely with TI&I operation teams such as Capital Market Operations (CMO), Wealth Management Operations (WMO), Global Money Operations (GMO), Business Contact Centre (BCC), Retail Operations (RO), Retail Payments & Estates, Credit Adjudication and/or Credit Processing Services (CPS).
  • You have experience with Operational Risk Management tools, such as Incident Reports, Change Initiative Risk Assessments, Risk and Control Self-Assessments, Risk Reviews, Control & Deficiency management and/or Regulatory Compliance.
  • You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complex problems, and making sense of information. You're confident in your ability to synthesize detailed information and communicate insights and conclusions in an impactful way.
  • You're passionate about people. You find meaning in relationships and surround yourself with a diverse network of partners. You build trust through respect and authenticity.
  • You love to learn. You're passionate about growing your knowledge, and you know that there is no limit to what you can achieve.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values – trust, teamwork and accountability.
