Director of Protective Services (Fire Chief)

The Town of Osoyoos (Town) seeks an experienced protective services professional with management experience to join our senior management team as the Director of Protective Services. Located in the southernmost area of the Okanagan Valley, the Town has a growing population of approximately 6,000. Osoyoos is a resort municipality renowned for its stunning desert landscapes, water-based activities, orchards, vineyards, and golf courses. The Director of Protective Services is a senior management position responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and strategic direction of the municipality's fire department. This role includes command of emergency response operations, oversight of fire prevention and public safety programs, and coordination of emergency planning activities. The position ensures departmental compliance with applicable legislation, policies, and safety standards, and plays a key role in protecting life, property, and the environment in the Town of Osoyoos.

The Director of Protective Services is a member of the senior leadership team and advises the Chief Administrative Officer and Council on fire protection, emergency preparedness, public education, and fire service infrastructure planning. The Department has two full-time Deputy Fire Chiefs, one part-time administrative support and nearly 30 paid on-call volunteers that serve the Town and region. The preferred candidate will possess:

  • High school graduation supplemented by post-secondary education in local government public administration or emergency service management,

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,

  • Completion of the BC Structure Firefighter Minimum Training Standards to the Full-Service Firefighter or NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 2,

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 2 certification (or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe),

  • Incident Command System 200 level certification, Fire Service Instructor certification,

  • Valid BC Driver License Class 5 with airbrake endorsement,

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a Fire Officer in a fire department of equal or larger size,

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in firefighting or other emergency service discipline.

This executive level position has a salary range of $119,723 to $140,850 (2025) and offers a competitive benefits package.
