Senior Accountant

Sherwood Park, AB
Senior Level
Full-Time

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Accountant for immediate hire to support our growing Finance team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented and highly analytical professional who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and is comfortable challenging financial results to ensure accuracy and integrity of the general ledger.

As a Senior Accountant, you will play a key role in strengthening financial reporting by not only supporting the month-end close process, but also reviewing, validating, and explaining financial outcomes. You will work closely with the Controller and leadership team to ensure financial data is accurate, meaningful, and decision useful.
This role goes beyond reconciliation and reporting, and is expected to identify issues at the source, not just correct them at month-end.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the monthly close process, ensuring completeness and accuracy of the general ledger through critical review of reconciliations, working papers, and supporting documentation.
  • Review, challenge, and approve journal entries, AP, AR, and project invoicing to ensure appropriate accounting treatment, accuracy, and consistency
  • Prepare and critically review complex journal entries and accruals, ensuring appropriate classification and alignment with accounting standards
  • Perform meaningful variance analysis on monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results, including clear identification and explanation of underlying drivers
  • Deliver insightful financial analysis that goes beyond reporting, translating financial results into actionable business insight
  • Proactively analyze GL activity to identify anomalies, trends, misclassifications, and process breakdowns, and drive corrective action at source
  • Strengthening integrity of assigned GL accounts by ensuring transactions are properly recorded and validated, not just reconciled
  • Monitor aged receivables and collaborate with stakeholders to address root causes impacting collections
  • Evaluate and enhance internal controls, identifying gaps and implementing practical improvements to reduce risk and improve accuracy
  • Drive process improvements with a focus on upstream accuracy and prevention of recurring errors
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting, including analysis of actuals versus plan with clear explanation of variances
  • Partner cross-functionally to improve financial data quality and reporting accuracy
  • Support payroll accounting, audits, and external auditor queries with analytical support, not just data provision
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff with emphasis on review quality, accuracy, and analytical thinking
