Prep Cook
The Prep Cook position provides a unique entry level opportunity with the ‘Na̱mg̱is Wellness Centre in their mission towards assisting those who have encountered hardship, trauma and addiction with bettering their lives and reestablishing themselves through health and wellness.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform routine kitchen tasks.
- Following the prep list created.
- Measure ingredients and seasonings to be used in cooking.
- Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting meat, and other meal prep.
- Clean, peel, slice and trim foods.
- Set up workstations and ingredients so that food can be prepared according to recipes.
- Prepare simple dishes, such as salads, sandwiches and snacks.
- Portion, assemble and wrap food or serve food.
- Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen by washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, and taking out trash.
- Ensure that all food and other items are stored properly.
- Comply with nutrition and sanitation guidelines.
- Perform other kitchen duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Daily communication with the cooks
- Daily completing the logbook, reporting any incidents or concerns when they arise.
- Attend meetings, staff development, and ongoing training sessions as required.
- Maintain serving area, replenishing condiments and other supplies as needed.
- Bringing clean dishes, flatware, and other items to the serving station.
- Removing used lunch and dinner dishes from the dining area to the kitchen.
- Dishwashing lunch and dinner dishes as well as used utensils, pots and pans etc.
- Restocking of client kitchen in dormitory building, snacks, beverages, etc. before the end of each shift.
There will be 2 Prep Cook positions available one being 4 days Monday to Thursday and the other as a weekend position from Friday to Sunday. Each shift will be 6 hours from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Holiday shifts may be required, as well as covering shifts in the case of illness or vacations.
Prep Cook Qualifications/Skills
- Knowledge of health and safety rules in a kitchen
- Knowledge of basic cooking techniques
- Organizational skills
- Patience
- Manual dexterity
- Communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure
- Very good physical condition and endurance
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Kitchen experience is an asset
- High school diploma or equivalent is desirable
- Foodsafe – can be completed after hiring
