About the role
Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC), a joint venture of the Stern Group and West Fraser Timber Company Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of premium paper products. Located in Whitecourt, and operating with a non-unionized workforce, the firm’s paper mill—the first in Alberta—produces paper of such high quality that it has become the standard by which other paper products manufactured in North America are measured. We are currently recruiting for the contract role of Accountant for an 18-month term. This position reports to the Accounting Supervisor and supports the general accounting and financial functions of ANC through duties such as cost reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and monthly/quarterly/annually reconciliations.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Preparation of monthly cost reporting, month-end and year-end journal entries, and year-end working papers
- Manage daily cash positioning, forecasting, and liquidity requirement
- Monitor bank balances and ensure sufficient funds for operations.
- Execute and record electronic fund transfers (EFTs), wires, and ACH payments.
- Reconcile bank accounts and investigate reconciling items.
- Manage foreign exchange (FX) exposure and hedging activities.
- Maintain strong internal controls over cash payments.
- Record treasury-related journal entries (cash, debt, interest, FX).
- Assist with audits by providing treasury documentation and reconciliations.
- Assist operational divisions with budgeting, forecasting, long-term planning, and projects.
- Financial analysis and special projects.
- Communicate and correspond with team members on a daily basis.
- Review/update accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of month-end journal entries and reports.
- Ensure that financial controls are in place and that company policies are followed.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you will bring to the role:

Diploma or degree in Accounting / Finance / Management.

2-5 years of experience in Accounting or Finance

Advanced Excel skills

Team-oriented
-
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving/investigative skills

Strong knowledge of internal controls
