About This Opportunity We are currently seeking a Systems Design Intern to join the Hitachi Rail team in Toronto.

The successful candidate will support system design activities under supervision, working within defined cost and schedule limits as outlined in approved work packages. Guidance from senior team members will be available as required.

You will work closely with a team of engineers and collaborate under the technical supervision of the System Design Lead. Tasks will be defined by the Work Package Manager and assigned to the Systems Engineering group.

Key Accountabilities TECHNICAL:

  • Prepare and support customer requirements compliance assessments and gap analyses.
  • Translate internal and external customer requirements into conceptual designs by performing operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies to evaluate alternative configurations and functional features.
  • Develop new concepts or refine existing ones to meet customer needs.
  • Support the preparation of system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing, modeling, and refining customer requirements as well as typical train-control domain requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Software, Hardware, and Integration, Testing & Validation (ITV) teams to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field-test issues.
  • Review documentation to ensure the correct implementation of all change requests.

SAFETY:

  • Promote a strong safety culture where product safety is a top priority.
  • Ensure safety is integrated into the design through early identification and resolution of safety-related issues.

Key Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Completion of first or second year of an undergraduate program or currently enrolled in a graduate program.
  • Experience using systems engineering and requirements management tools such as DOORS, Polarion, Melody Advance, or similar.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Software, Hardware, Tools, and ITV teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work under supervision to deliver required engineering artifacts.
  • Technical curiosity and a desire to understand how complex systems operate.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles, practices, and the systems development life cycle.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week in a hybrid environment for the duration of the internship (minimum 2 days per week in the office).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Co-op student available for a 4- or 8-month work term, with at least one remaining semester after the internship.
  • Previous co-op or internship experience is an asset (relevant academic projects may also be considered).
  • Experience developing or reviewing test scenarios and procedures based on requirements.
  • Knowledge of rail signaling is an asset.
