Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting at Emera Finance, you will be a key member of the Emera Finance team. As the Manager, Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting, you will be a key contributor in the timely and accurate delivery of Emera’s MD&A and financial statements and other internal and external reporting requirements on an annual and quarterly basis. You will also be responsible for assessing the impact of new and revised accounting standards and disclosure requirements. You will provide technical advice and guidance to the Emera Group of Companies on non-routine, new or proposed business development transactions and other complex accounting matters.

You are a financial thought leader and will help develop and maintain accounting policies and processes while fostering continuous improvement, effectiveness, and efficiency. You build strong collaborative relationships with business units, operating subsidiaries, external professional services firms, and the senior executive leadership team, ensuring the highest standards of service. This role is cross-functional and requires you to work closely with various business units and operations across the Emera enterprise in a variety of jurisdictions including the US and Caribbean.

Key elements of the role include:

  • As a key contributor, responsibility for the timely and accurate completion of quarterly and annual MD&A and financial statements in a multi-jurisdictional, publicly traded reporting environment under USGAAP

  • Responsible for analyzing, reviewing, and communicating the accounting treatment and required disclosure related to non-routine, new or proposed business development transactions and other complex accounting matters to ensure proper treatment

  • Leading disclosure research projects and drafting of new disclosure initiatives

  • Review and contribution to other external reports with financial disclosures prepared outside of the Finance group, including: Annual Information Form, Annual Report, Sustainability report, Management Information Circular and any securities or prospectus filings

  • Support the preparation of various Audit Committee and Disclosure Committee reports and presentations

  • Liaising with Emera and its operating companies’ senior financial leadership teams on accounting policy and disclosure related items as needed

  • Maintaining strong technical knowledge of accounting standards under USGAAP, disclosure requirements and current industry best practices to provide superior financial expertise

  • Ensuring compliance with internal control requirements; and

  • Ensuring an effective working relationship and assisting in the management of Emera’s external auditors on financial reporting policies, technical papers, disclosures and other matters

Skills, Capabilities and Experience:

As the ideal candidate, you will have a successful track record and experience in financial reporting techniques and processes as well as researching and analyzing complex accounting policy related items. You demonstrate a strong ability to communicate financial information in a clear and concise manner to various stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be a CPA or equivalent, have a post-secondary degree in a relevant field and have at least 5-7 years of progressive experience in a relevant financial reporting or accounting policy function. Other skills and capabilities include:

  • Excellent understanding of accounting policies and standards, consolidation processes, and an in-depth ability to understand financial statements
  • Well-developed project management abilities, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks
  • Understanding of disclosure requirements for MD&A and financial statements under US GAAP and in compliance with CSA and SEC
  • Strong business and financial acumen, problem solving, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, presenting findings to senior management, and explaining complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders
  • Experience working in, or auditing, a public company
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, while working under pressure to meet tight deadlines

The Manager, Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting will uphold the highest standards of discretion and confidentiality and exercise good judgment on a daily basis. Experience working with the energy sector would be considered an asset, as would an in depth understanding of US GAAP and public company reporting.
