The Advisor, Career Development (ACD) works with the Career Development team to provide educational and employment services to participants and graduates of UGMs Recovery programs. The ACD is responsible for assisting in planning, facilitating, and connecting participants to practices that promote career exploration, employment preparation, employment acquisition, and job retention. The ACD will assist the CD team in developing a robust network of partners and services that will promote stability and independence. Finally, the ACD will assist in the maintenance and implementation of the UGM internship program and the UGM Scholarship Program

This position offers a starting hourly salary range of $30.40 - $33.22. It is a permanent, full-time role (37.5 hours per week).

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Client Services:

  • Conduct individual and group career counselling sessions
  • Administer and interpret career assessments
  • Develop personalized career plans for clients
  • Assist clients in identifying suitable job opportunities
  • Provide interview preparation and resume writing assistance
  • Conduct workshops and seminars on career-related topics
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of labour market trends and job search strategies
  • Offer support and resources for career transitions and advancements
  • Monitor client progress and provide ongoing support and adjustments to career plans
  • Stay informed about industry standards and best practices in career development

Community & Resource Building:

  • Assist in collaborating with educational institutions and training programs to support client development
  • Assist with networking with potential employers to build long-term partnerships for the purposes of trainings and employment opportunities
  • Assist in building and maintaining a robust resource library. Research resource materials for education and service
  • Research pertinent topics like barriers to employment, workers’ rights, market employment trends, and supportive programs that would benefit clients

Administrative:

  • Assist in creating and maintaining resources for UGM recovery programs and for clients
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client progress in job search, case management and employment using program software (Share Vision).
  • Assist in writing and developing curriculum and presentations, including handouts
  • Provide administrative support to the CD team as needed

General:

  • Work with internal service providers to ensure coordinated and streamlined

  • Participate in team meetings, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Career Development activities.

  • Adhere to all UGM-published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.

  • Perform other duties as

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Agreement with UGM’s Mission Statement (see www.ugm.ca) and understanding of the UGM Core Values and Statement of Faith.

  • University degree and professional certification preferred

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience within the Career Development, Community outreach, social work, or related field experience

  • Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) designation is an asset or willingness to attain this designation

  • Strong understanding of labor market trends and job search strategies is an asset

  • Knowledge of issues related to individuals with multiple barriers to employment is an asset

  • Knowledge of addiction, recovery and homelessness is an asset

  • Understanding of Trauma-Informed Care practices, which include helping to identify negative events that have impacted the client’s functioning, and developing interventions that emphasize safety, choice, and personal control

  • Intermediate computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook)

  • Database experience is an asset

  • Curriculum writing experience is an asset

  • Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality within the organization and its clientele

  • Ability to successfully interact and communicate clearly with a wide variety of people, including employers, partnering agencies, clients, and co-workers

  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive matters with tact, diplomacy and good judgment.

  • Demonstrated ability to de-escalate tense situations that could lead to aggressiveness or violence.

  • Willingness to complete UGM’s Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training and all other mandatory trainings, including First Aid training/certification and Naloxone training/certification.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location

Work is generally performed indoors within an office environment, with standard office equipment.

  • Physical Requirements

Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 50% of the time. Employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 90%.

The employee is required to see, talk and hear.
