Position Summary:

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for designing mechanical components and systems, as well as assisting in the development of prototypes and production-ready designs for manufacturing. The role requires collaboration with engineering teams, vendors, and production staff to ensure the designs are accurate, efficient, and manufacturable.

Location: This position will be located at our Cambridge North facility

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs for products, components, and systems, ensuring they meet design specifications and functional requirements.
  • Use CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA) to create 2D and 3D models, drawings, and assemblies.
  • Design products with considerations for material properties, manufacturability, durability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Assist in the development and testing of prototypes to verify the functionality and design integrity.
  • Work closely with engineers to modify and refine designs based on prototype testing results.
  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including technical drawings, specifications, and parts lists (BOM).
  • Ensure all designs adhere to company standards, industry regulations, and quality control measures.
  • Prepare and update CAD models and drawings in compliance with revisions or changes in design.
  • Work with production engineers, machinists, and assembly teams to review and refine designs for manufacturability.
  • Provide technical support during the manufacturing process to resolve design-related issues.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team to select materials and components for the design.
  • Assist in the creation of test plans for prototypes and final designs, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Analyze test results and make design adjustments as needed to address any performance or safety issues.
  • Troubleshoot design issues and propose effective solutions to improve functionality, performance, or manufacturability.
  • Modify existing designs to improve efficiency, reduce costs, or meet customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs are cost-effective, meet budgetary constraints, and align with manufacturing capabilities.
  • Suggest design alternatives or modifications to reduce material waste, manufacturing costs, and lead times.
  • Ensure designs meet all relevant safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Work with quality assurance teams to ensure that products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field. (Relevant certifications in CAD or design software may be preferred.)
  • Experience: 2-5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years related experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with engineers, production, and other departments.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.Personal commitment to high quality standards.  Strong communication skills and an ability to formulate positive interpersonal relationships.
