About The Role Occupational Health & Safety Advisor reports to the Director of Human Resources and provides support and guidance to improve the occupational health and safety performance throughout the organization. This role is responsible to maintain and enhance a culture of safety for all staff and persons served.

Responsibilities Include but not limited to;

  • Engage and mobilize your team to achieve the purpose, goals, objective and key results of the organization.
  • Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  • Model the values and leadership behaviours of the organization and inspire others to do the same.
  • Develop and implement health and safety initiatives and training.
  • Provides support and guidance to communities to manage their WorkSafeBC / Alberta WCB claims.
  • Supports and provides guidance to community leaders to liaise with medical professionals on modified duties and return to work programs.
  • Engages site leadership teams to develop and implement prevention strategies to minimize the risk of injury in the workplace.
  • Gathers statistics and data to analyze trends in work-related injuries and develop action plans to prevent injuries.
  • Coaches and advises community leadership team on maintaining regular contact with injured/ill employees to reduce time loss durations and enhance recovery.
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
  • accident prevention,
  • knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,
  • the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and
  • Utilizing infection control procedures
  • Participates in community visits relating to critical health and safety issues.
  • Stays current with the collective agreements, WorkSafe BC regulations, Alberta WCB Regulations, Human Rights legislation, and Long-Term Disability Benefit plans.
  • Reviews, develops, updates and implements organizational policies.
  • Develops and implements OH&S educational materials e.g (JOHSC).
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications And Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role at a large organization that has multiple locations.
  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Kinesiology, or Human Resources.
  • Demonstrated track record of improving occupational health and safety, injury prevention and managing return to work plans with the ability to apply case management principle.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong ability to perform functions of the position with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Strong multi-tasking, time-management, negotiation and customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with clients and team members.
  • Must be able to read, write. and verbally communicate effectively in English
  • Proven ability to work within confidentiality requirements.
  • Strong computer literacy skills.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Excellent analytical skills being able to produce detailed analytics on statistics and related comparisons.
