About the role

STATUS: Full-time Salary Grade: 8 Job Summary Reporting to the Director, the Manager, Laboratory (SPD/Hemo) will have responsibilities for the oversight of both the Specimen Procurement Department (SPD) and Hematology departments at both sites of WRH. The incumbent will coordinate the key functions of assigned technical areas to contribute to the efficient and safe delivery of patient centered laboratory services. As a key member of the Laboratory Leadership team, the Laboratory Manager (SPD/Hemo) will actively contribute to a respectful, supportive and positive working environment for all staff.

This position will interact with unit managers, and any partner hospital stakeholders as well as WRH hospital leadership as required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and manages staff, schedules and resources to support high quality patient care.
  • Collaborates with team members and stakeholders across the region to anticipate resource service delivery requirements and modifies processes and procedures accordingly.
  • Ensures that operational protocols are fulfilled and customer needs met in the laboratory areas assigned (which may include more than one technical discipline, support areas such as phlebotomy, specimen management, and other support functions such as LIS, courier).
  • Oversight of quality assurance and continuous quality improvement of assigned areas and adherence to policies, procedures and processes of the quality management system.
  • Provides input and participates in the operational budget planning and capital planning for assigned areas.
  • Coordinates and manages departmental resources within approved budget and participates/completes budget variance investigations.
  • Effective use, control and management of inventory to support seamless Laboratory operations.
  • Participates and leads Laboratory teams and committees and participates on hospital wide committees.
  • Coaches, mentors, develops and reviews staff to ensure competencies are maintained and documented.
  • Monitors Laboratory industry to identify trends and best practices for assigned areas.
  • Selection and validation of appropriate products, technology and instrumentation and participation with RFI and RFP processes.
  • Develops business cases/briefing notes with Senior Management to support process improvements as required.
  • Ensures the ongoing maintenance of equipment and that associated training and documentation is appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that legislated requirements are met, including C.M.L.T.O. requirements for registration and competency, including documentation.
  • Ensures workload units are gathered according to hospital guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Maintaining and promoting a safe and clean working environment for all employees, students, visitors, patients/clients, family members and physicians and fulfilling the duties of workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  • Reporting and documenting any observed risks or hazards to management personnel and taking immediate corrective action whenever safe and feasible
  • Acting in accordance with hospital patient safety policies and programs
  • Responding to safety risks to clients and takes action in situations where client safety and well-being are compromised.
  • Reporting any observed risks to the appropriate authority whose actions or behaviours towards clients are unsafe or unprofessional.

  • French Language proficiency an asset.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program is required.
  • An A.R.T. (or equivalent) is an asset.
  • Minimum of 7 years of MLT experience, working in Laboratory Medicine.
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent Hematology experience.
  • C.M.L.T.O. certification required with membership in good standing.
  • Other Laboratory Medicine association memberships an asset.
