About the role

Job Title: Engineer- Automation, Senior

Job Summary

Serve as the plant resource for line improvements, line automation, realignment of product flow equipment and machinery in conjunction with Engineering and Maintenance. Provide technical leadership and assist in the training of Machine Operators, Maintenance personnel and Engineering staff.

Responsibility

  • Identify and direct continuous improvement activities.
  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanisms, components, and systems.
  • Plan and manage projects, and prepare material, cost and timing estimates, reports and design specifications for machinery and systems.
  • Analyze PLC, PMC and robot programs.
  • Supervise and inspect the installation, modification and commissioning of automation systems within the facility.
  • Investigate failures and unexpected maintenance problems related to automation programming and signals.
  • Implementing, designing and integrating PLC, PMC/CNC and robot programs with programs like Ultraware, Panel Builder, Fanuc Ladder, RoboGuide, RobotStudio and Profinet programs.
  • Track data for performance of the automation and any issues that occur.
  • Determine which equipment to use for projects and select appropriate electrical codes.
  • To setup standards for programming, components, systems related to automation based on what is currently in use in the plant. Introduction of new technology to be planned and controlled via approval streams.

Academic/Educational Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor of Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering.

  • Trade license in Industrial Electrical Maintenance (442A) would be an asset. Engineering License (P.Eng.) would be an asset.

Required Skills/Experience

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in PLC and robotic system design, repair and programming. Minimum 5 years of experience integrating new automation systems. Must be familiar with IT systems. Understanding of electrical / electronic schematic diagrams, blueprints and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.

  • Basic knowledge of computer networking, Ethernet connections, TCP/IP protocol.

  • Experience with computer-assisted design.

  • Able to work with co-workers and management through effective communication.

  • Able to integrate work within teams of engineers and technicians to work on common projects. Attend formal professional development seminars and conferences as needed.
