About the role
POSITION: Backhoe Loader Operator - Groundsperson Equipment Operator SITE: Maintenance HOURS: 40 hrs/wk JOB COMMENCES: Commencing ASAP until September 16, 2026, or earlier depending on the return of the incumbent. WAGE: AS PER UNION AGREEMENT Required Knowledge, Education, Ability And Skills
- Grade 12 and certificates in power saw safety, playground safety and installation, sprinkler systems and have a good working knowledge of chain link fencing.
- A valid Class 5 BC driver's license, heavy hauler driver certification (code 20) with air endorsement.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and capability to move heavy miscellaneous items for up to eight hours a day. A medical certificate confirming physical fitness will be required.
- Capability to work at heights and in crawl spaces.
- General knowledge and ability to maintain grounds, buildings and equipment.
- Ability to assist trades personnel when/where required
- Mechanical ability to the degree required to perform equipment operational and daily/weekly/time-based preventative maintenance
- Thorough knowledge of heavy trucks, tractors and self-propelled mowers as well as the ability to operate powered grounds equipment safely and effectively
- Perform other duties as required.

Strength The Grounds/Equipment Operator Position falls into the Strong Strength Demands category because of the heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling demands as outlined in the following:
Agility The Grounds/Maintenance Position requires physical condition that must enable them to do the following physical tasks:
- Work at heights off of an extension ladder or a man-lift that has a 350 lb weight capacity and a 24-foot reach
- Access and work in crawlspaces with limited heights
Cognitively The Grounds/Maintenance Position requires the following:
Multi-task in order to operate machinery safely while waiting for students and other traffic
- Tolerate high noise levels for most of the workday
- Withstand constant moderate vibration for up to 8 hours per day while operating machinery
- Withstand adverse temperatures outside during the summer and winter months
- Demonstrate good verbal skills when dealing with staff, students and the public
- Exhibit good judgement to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and the public
The starting hourly rate of pay for this Maintenance Backhoe Loader Operator-Groundsperson Equipment Operator position is $28.98 per hour. All continuing positions receive a competitive benefits package and pension.
