Grey County’s Housing department is recruiting a permanent, full-time Custodian. This position is primarily based in Owen Sound, with the expectation of supporting other locations as operational needs require. This job posting is for an existing vacancy.

Purpose

To provide effective custodial duties in the Grey County Housing department, including general maintenance, cleaning, inspection and security.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare units for new tenants, including general carpentry repairs.
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs such as repairing/replacing leaky faucets, toilet repairs, light bulb replacement, clearing blocked drains, etc.
  • Operate a snow blower and/or lawn mower (where such are available), including minor maintenance of equipment.
  • Ensure all exterior areas are maintained in a clean, safe manner for staff, tenants, and the general public.
  • General landscape duties, including maintenance and cultivation of flower beds, trees and shrubs, parking lots, snow removal of walkways, and salting and sanding as required.
  • Show vacant units to prospective tenants and report maintenance repairs to the supervisor.
  • Report vandalism and disturbances to the supervisor and/or police and assist with lock-outs,
  • Complete an investigation of tenant complaints, rectifying where possible
  • Conduct routine fire alarm testing, generator testing and building operational machinery inspections/testing

Working Conditions

Forty (40) hours per week. Work is subject to interruptions, overtime and varied hours. Exposure to restricted spaces and heights, chemicals, and inclement weather is expected. Overtime is required to maintain safe access to buildings (i.e., afterhours snow removal from sidewalks and entrances) When more than one building is assigned as part of the custodian’s portfolio, use of a personal vehicle is required.

Knowledge and Skill

  • Secondary School Diploma and knowledge of mechanics/basic equipment maintenance is preferred
  • Health and Safety training, including WHMIS, is an asset.
  • Knowledge of modern janitorial methods and the ability to complete minor maintenance repairs is a prerequisite
  • Ability to use email, Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Proven ability to exercise tact and diplomacy is required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is also a requirement
  • Familiarity with techniques for interacting with individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, in person and over the phone
  • Exposure and dealings with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, diverse personalities, and situations of complexity
  • Knowledge and safety measures around drug paraphernalia, bio hazard clean up, etc.

Impact of Error

Poor custodial practices create an unsafe working environment and an unhygienic living environment. Failure to perform required checks and maintenance of equipment will result in violation of legislation such as the Fire Code.
