Financial Services is part of a vibrant and expanding campus where diversity fuels innovation. Your Opportunity Reporting directly to the Manager, Accounting & Processing Support, the Senior Research Accountant will work closely with the Academic Departments at UTSC, Office of the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation (OVPRI) at UTSC, Procurement Services and Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation to develop relationships and create efficiencies to support the University’s academic mission and research activity at UTSC.

The Senior Research Accountant will assist with interpreting and applying University and sponsor policies to independently determine research compliance. This role will support responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate. They will foster cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, and accomplish financial accounting responsibilities by serving as a resource on research administration issues. The responsibilities will include monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for research agreements.

The Senior Research Accountant will develop and implement new financial and non-financial processes with appropriate stakeholders to support the standardization and effectiveness of business processes for administering research grants and operating accounts. This role provides support and consultation services to Principal Investigators (PIs) and Business Officers through workshops, budget monitoring, and assistance in preparing complex reports for stakeholders.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Providing advice and data to support the development of business cases and analytics for departmental initiatives and for management decision-making
  • Producing complex reports involving statistical and/or financial information and identifying and resolving data anomalies and discrepancies
  • Analyzing financial processes and procedures and recommending improvements as appropriate
  • Keeping well-informed on key University and sponsor policies and trends
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists
  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of documents
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or a related field. An acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum five years of related financial and accounting experience, preferably in a university setting.
  • Experience managing audits with a strong understanding of auditing practices and procedures, including developing and implementing risk management strategies and internal controls
  • Strong financial analysis, budgeting and reporting skills required
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suites and Financial Information Systems with the ability to develop and produce complex statistical and/or financial reports
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to identify and resolve issues within a changing, high-pressure environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Assets (Nonessential)

  • Working knowledge of research granting agencies and their programs is highly preferred.
  • Experience with research compliance reviews is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with grants and research accounts is highly preferred.
