NURSING INFORMATICS SPECIALIST Informatics Department Position Type: Temporary, Full-time (up-to 12 months)

Shift Type: Day, including alternate weekends (subject to change) Hourly Pay Rate : $46.59 – $60.30

Job Summary: The Nursing Informatics Specialist role will provide Health Information System electronic documentation support, as well as clinical care and/or services support to the Hospital. This includes the primary responsibility of determining the needs and clinical workflow requirements for clinical applications across Baycrest. The Nursing Informatics Specialist will support and participate in the on-going implementation, evaluation and sustainability of the electronic clinical information system. This individual will work with the interprofessional staff to optimize adoption and standardization of clinical information systems through education and training, workflow/process analysis, quality outcomes, project management, evaluation, and provision of support in accordance with best practices, legislative requirements and organizational goals. The Nursing Informatics Specialist participates in service and hospital- wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy client-centered environment that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leverages registered nursing training and experience, to collaborate among multiple clinical professionals, identify clinical documentation needs and develop solutions
  • Assesses clinical end-user needs and provide expert level support and Electronic Health Record (EHR) custom solutions in Meditech through Custom Defined Screen (CDS) building
  • Coordinates NPR (Meditech) report writing.
  • Supports and customizes Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions within Meditech, in three or more of the clinical modules
  • Involvement in modification and maintenance of various Meditech dictionaries as required.
  • Utilization of on-line training and knowledgebase resources from the meditech.com website and Meditech-L list resource group
  • Designs, develops and maintains documentation relating to departmental and user workflow needs.
  • Leads end-user training
  • Adherence to basic project management and requirements gathering/analysis methodologies
  • Undertakes and completes other activities, as assigned or delegated by the Manager of Business & Clinical Informatics
  • Tracking and monitoring of new requests for system changes
  • Collaborate with Informatics team members to define and deliver technical solutions for clinical documentation

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Current and maintained registration, in good standing, from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current and Sustained practical knowledge of nursing care, applicable to nursing documentation practice.
  • BScN or equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years nursing experience with in-depth knowledge of clinical standards of care for nursing including 2 years of gerontological nursing.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience using electronic health record (EHR) system is required
  • Strong computer skills: MS Office, Internet Research capabilities, Meditech Magic, version 5.6x is essential
  • Knowledge of adult learning/teaching principles and ability to conduct training and presentation sessions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent skill in problem recognition and problem solving, including critical incident management
  • Self -motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent customer relations and support service
  • Strong organizational, multitasking and analytical skills
  • Knowledge and skill with change management strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to take professional accountability for leading, organizing, providing and delegating care activities for clients and families
  • Interest in theory-based nursing practice
  • Interested in professional life-long learning and development.
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable level of attendance
