What we offer

The Manufacturing Automation & Controls Engineer will contribute to the factory-level data strategy as well as equipment-level control systems within SAMI’s new, state-of-the art factories. This role offers exposure to advanced industrial control systems, robotics, and Industry 4.0 technologies. It requires close collaboration across the manufacturing engineering and information technology teams, which together compose SAMI’s Technology Organization.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of SAMI’s Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including integrations with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Building Management Systems (BMS), and our Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP).
  • Implement automated data collection, historian systems, and real-time production visualization tools.
  • Source and evaluate production equipment, managing vendors from design through commissioning.
  • Develop and maintain PLC and HMI programming standards across production lines.
  • Design and support industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP, VLANs).
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, including control narratives, functional descriptions, and I/O lists.
  • Optimize robot paths, end-of-arm tooling, and automated system cycle times.
  • Analyze production data to identify and prioritize continuous improvements in safety, quality, productivity, cost, and sustainability.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Train operators, technicians, and cross-functional teams on new equipment, systems, and processes.
  • Other duties as required.

What you bring

  • Degree or diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering, or another related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in equipment commissioning and new facility setup.
  • Experience with MES, SCADA, BMS and ERP systems.
  • Proficiency in reading technical drawings (mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic).
  • Proficiency in PLC and robot programming.
  • Proficiency in CAD (CATIA, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD).
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, Power BI, Python, SQL, or similar).
  • Strong project management, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with IIoT/Industry 4.0 technologies or advanced data platforms.
  • Experience in highly automated or roboticized environments.
  • Background in large-scale wood product manufacturing.
  • Lean Six Sigma and PMP designations are assets.

Compensation

The expected base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $110,000. Actual pay may vary depending on your job-related knowledge, competencies, and skills. We recognize that exceptional situations may fall outside of this range, and we encourage all interested applicants to apply.
