Position Summary

Are you a hands-on problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment? The YMCA of Saskatoon is seeking a dedicated Building Operator to ensure our facilities are safe, reliable, and operating at their best. This role is ideal for someone who takes initiative, enjoys technical challenges, and is eager to grow their skills in building operations.

As a key member of our Facilities & Operations team, you will oversee daily maintenance and safety of the Downtown YMCA while supporting additional YMCA locations. You’ll play a vital role in responding to operational needs, performing equipment repairs, and mentoring team members—all while contributing to an exceptional experience for our members and community. This is a full-time, permanent position reporting to the CEO.

Key Responsibilities

1. Building Operations & Preventive Maintenance

  • Conduct daily inspections and routine preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Monitor building automation systems and equipment performance
  • Maintain water chemistry and filtration systems for aquatic environments
  • Ensure all building systems operate efficiently and safely

2. Supervision, Training & Workflow Coordination

  • Assign daily tasks and oversee Facility Attendant and Assistant Building Operator performance
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical skills development to the Assistant Building Operator
  • Ensure cleaning and operational readiness standards are consistently met
  • Support training in safety protocols, emergency procedures, and equipment use

3. Repairs & Technical Maintenance

  • Perform corrective repairs on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Repair lighting, fixtures, locks, and building hardware
  • Support minor carpentry, flooring, painting, and interior repairs
  • Repair and maintain fitness and aquatic equipment
  • Assist and train the Assistant Building Operator in troubleshooting and repair techniques
  • Escalate specialized repairs to Lead Maintenance Technician or external contractors and coordinate their work

4. Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response

  • Perform fire system testing and life safety equipment inspections
  • Respond promptly to urgent building and operational issues
  • Ensure compliance with WHMIS, OH&S, and YMCA safety standards
  • Participate in emergency drills and response efforts

5. Administrative & Reporting Requirements

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs and inspection records
  • Submit supply, parts, and equipment needs to the Centre Director
  • Assist with purchase tracking and vendor coordination
  • Support asset management and capital maintenance planning

6. Strategic Facilities Planning

  • Monitor building condition and assessfuture operational needs

• Recommend lifecycle replacements, capital improvements, and energy-efficiency opportunities

  • Identify cost-effective solutions that optimize facility operations and sustainability

Qualifications

  • Experience in building operations or facility maintenance required
  • Fireman Boiler Operator certification required (or ability to obtain)
  • Swimming Pool Operator certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Standard First Aid & CPR required (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights with proper safety procedures
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical/mechanical issues independently
