About the role

As the Lead Automation Commissioning Engineer you will support the various stages of the Polar Max Project. This role is responsible for testing, commissioning, and integrating automation systems at client sites located in Helsinki, Finland, and Lévis, Québec. This includes configuring hardware and software, performing system validation, troubleshooting, and ensuring that systems meet performance and quality standards. The engineer works closely with project teams, clients, and subcontractors to deliver automation projects on time and within budget. More specifically, you will:

  • Support the Commissioning Department in developing vessel-specific commissioning documentation, task-specific risk analyses, permits to work, and livening up notices.
  • Organize and set up test configurations, ensuring all required equipment is onsite and available in accordance with test plans and standards.
  • Lead and coordinate the automation aspects of commissioning and testing/trials, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, dock and sea trials, according to the written procedures, while ensuring progress is reported to the Commissioning Manager.
  • Present operational commissioned automation systems to classification societies and client for witness testing and acceptance.
  • Obtain all required signatures from classification societies and client to complete commissioning documentation and formal closeout.
  • Adhere to all in-house health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies at all times.
  • Plan and execute the commissioning of automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, DCS, and related field instruments.
  • Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) when required.
  • Configure and calibrate field devices such as sensors, actuators, and drives.
  • Develop and execute commissioning plans, test procedures, and validation protocols.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and communication networks (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Interface with design engineers, software developers, and control panel manufacturers.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and site-specific requirements.
  • Provide technical support during project handover and post-commissioning phases.
  • Document test results, changes, and commissioning progress.
  • Support quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Automation Engineer with sea-going experience. A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 of relevant experience in automation commissioning or a related engineering field.
  • Industry certifications (e.g., Kongsberg, Siemens, ABB) are considered an asset.
  • Availability for regular travel to Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, from 2026 to early 2028.
  • Proven experience with a variety of automation systems across different vessel types.
  • Experience with HMI/GUI interfaces.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop diagrams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word and Excel specifically.
  • Strong problem-solving skill and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government’s Contract Security Program, as well as meet the requirements of the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
