About the role

Position: Topman

Whissell: Building More Than a Job

As a Topman in underground utilities construction, you’ll lead the team in installing sewer, storm, and utility lines. Your day starts with safety checks, then you’ll coordinate pipe alignment and depth using laser levels and other tools. You’ll assist with lifting large pipes, manage machinery, and ensure trench stability. It’s a hands-on role with plenty of problem-solving, teamwork, and working with cutting-edge tech.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report any formal issues/incidences to Foreman
  • Prepare, load and help labourers gather tools required for the day
  • Assist crew members in the ditch by watching slopes, rolling lumps of dirt, and shifting ditch walls
  • Utilize and prepare all tools required in the ditch.
  • Remains at the respective post at all times
  • Act as the main communication point between labourers, pipe layers and foreman
  • Hook up and crane tools into the ditch
  • Assists in loading/unloading of ditch/site protection (fencing/barricades) and setup
  • Act as the main watchpoint for hazards, ladders, slopes, etc.
  • Measuring for proper height of batter boards, and continuously ensuring they are level
  • Understands correct rigging requirements, including cables, shackles, and tie points
  • All tools used onsite on a day-to-day basis must be utilized with proven competency (shovels, broom, pick axe, etc.)
  • Ability to correctly mentor junior crew members
  • Demonstrates ability to protect work area with correct signage, barricades and fencing
  • Understands encroachment limitations/distances when working near overhead/underground utilities
  • Proves ability to gather and utilize correct materials for craning purposes
  • Understands excavator right of ways
  • Correctly centers load to be lifted into the ditch
  • Correctly utilizes hand and power tools
  • Shows ability to utilize correct hand signals when directing machine operators
  • Good housekeeping skills
  • Proves ability to be a spotter for machinery coming into encroachment areas of utility right of ways
  • Understands ladders must be in the ditch, no more than 8 meters from the work zone, and must move ladder ahead as work progresses
  • Can read blueprints, drawings and grade sheets
  • Assist in acquiring HI and shooting eyelevel

Qualifications:

  • Underground Utility or Civil construction experience are required.
  • High attention to detail is required.
  • Ensure compliance with all Company policies, OH & S Legislation, and WCB reporting procedures.
  • Understand and maintain quality and production standards and work to achieve established production goals.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction procedures, including safety practices
  • The ability to read and understand blueprints and job schedules
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • General knowledge of computers
  • Fluent in English and hand signals
  • Civil construction knowledge
  • Must have a means of transportation.
  • Must have own steel-toes safety boots.
