POSITION OVERVIEW:
The City of Maple Ridge is hiring forauxiliary Custodial Guard 1 positions. This is custodial work entails responsibility for searching, guarding, and attending to the welfare and safety of prisoners in the RCMP cellblock area. The incumbent maintains surveillance over prisoners, ensures for feeding of same, and adheres to all RCMP procedures and policies. Work performance is evaluated by a superior in terms of continued alertness, attitude and adherence to well-defined practices and procedures.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the tenth school grade, some experience in custodial, detention or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Sound knowledge of the policies and practices, methods and procedures involved in the control, custody, welfare and escorting of prisoners.
Ability to understand needs and attitudes of prisoners and to deal with sane in a firm, discreet and compassionate manner.
Ability and willingness to deal with prisoners who may be intoxicated and in unclean physical condition and to perform body searches as required.
Ability to maintain mental alertness, to act quickly, correctly, and calmly in emergency situations and to exercise moderate physical strength and agility as the circumstances warrant.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
REQUIRED LICENCES, CERTIFICATES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
Designated St. John Ambulance First-Aid Certificate and certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation or equivalent.
Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance
As per the Collective Agreement Note F All Custodial Guards work twelve (12) consecutive hours on shift with no breaks. Applicable overtime rates are paid after an employee has worked twelve (12) consecutive hours. For the purposes of the application of overtime on “Saturday and Sunday”, Custodial Guards are recognized as working a Non-Standard Work Week in Article 13.03 of the Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK
As per the Letter of Understanding (LOU) for shift schedule for Custodial Guards the following will apply:
Shift Differential:
Shift differential shall apply to these roles as per Article 13.10.
Overtime:
Overtime shall be applied to all hours worked exceeding 12 hours in a single shift. All hours worked in excess of 12 hours will be compensated per the applicable overtime rates. Overtime shall be paid at 1.5x the hourly rate for the first two hours of overtime and 2x the hourly rate for any overtime thereafter.
Auxiliary Employee Scheduling:
Shift Assignment Process
To ensure that less senior employees have opportunities to gain experience, the Employer will implement a system designed to support skill development for all employees, while promoting fairness and equity in the distribution of shifts.
Auxiliary guards shall be notified of available shifts on a quarterly basis and shall be assigned a shift and or sequence of shifts as per the following process:
Auxiliary shifts will be assigned based on availability and seniority, prioritizing employees who can commit to the full duration of a shift and or sequence of shifts.
After a shift, or sequence of shifts, has been assigned, the next available shift will be assigned to the next senior employee. This process will continue sequentially down the list until all shifts have been assigned, at which point the rotation will restart at the next employee on the seniority list.
If no employee is available to fill an entire shift, the Employer may offer the shift to the next most senior employee available for part of the shift, or as otherwise determined by operational needs.
Short-Notice Shift Coverage
If a shift needs to be filled within 24 hours of its start time, the Employer may bypass the outlined process to fill the shift as needed.
Additional Scheduling Guidelines
Employees will have a reasonable opportunity to provide their availability before each schedule is created.
Schedules will be posted quarterly, or as needed.

This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours.
