About the role
- Lead/mentor teams of design engineers and SMEs as well as act as an individual contributor.
- Conduct requirement reviews and generate estimates based on recent precedent and new tasks
- Conduct risk reviews of new projects to aid in preparation of contingency or to identify opportunities
- Perform design of hardened packaging while considering the input of stakeholders including the Production facilities/vendors
- Contribute to or lead team training initiatives to develop members capabilities
- Take part and encourage peer reviews during the various design stages to root out errors early and to enable greater team communication on happenings within the team
- Collect metrics to evaluate performance on delivery of items and to suggest areas for process improvement
- Technical tasks:
- Mechanical design - Produce requirements-driven CAD model solutions to be productized for naval environments. Review design outputs to ensure quality standards are achieved.
- Physical analysis – Review /optimize structural design margins with FEA tools ensuring suitability for use
- Thermal design – Review/optimize mechanical designs considering thermal constraints for any electrical systems equipment
- RF design – Review/design systems considering conducted/radiated emissions and susceptibility
- Test planning – Review/develop verification plans to evaluate lifecycle performance of equipment/systems
- Peer reviewing - Ensure work products effectively meet requirements, conform to standards and eliminate defects earlier in design cycle
- Requirements reviews- Conduct reviews of internal customer/stakeholder requirements ensuring they are objective and have a clearly defined achievement metric
- Design specification authoring - Complete specifications detailing design rationale employed to effectively meet requirements
- Risk analysis - Assess risks/opportunities that may be realized during the development lifecycle
Responsibilities:
- Customer focus: Able to balance the needs of internal customers and external customers to deliver on requirements. Create clarity and flow down of priorities against timeline. Identifies risk and probable likelihood and impacts to schedule, cost and quality. Socialize risk plans and mitigation strategies with stakeholders. Ensures risks are documented in project risk registry with clear owner, status and contingency assets.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure NPI inputs are aligned with standard industry/LMC practices to ensure an efficient transition from design to fabrication to shorten the path to revenue realization.
- Continuous Improvement: Approves and implements opportunities to improve product development processes. Socializes improvement initiative/new processes for stakeholder use and information.
- Measuring/Tracking Progress: Mentors staff on EV and reports on BoE justification and logs cause/effect risks of significant labor time deviations. Will include Control Account Manager (CAM) role on projects.
- Adaptive Leadership: Accepts constant change by pivoting solution direction to employ a variety of alternatives as deliverable scope evolves. Leverages strong historic credibility to broaden solution envelopes. Interest in the business on a broader scale is evidenced by market knowledge and competitive threats. Make conscious use of the organizational strengths and weaknesses to justify tactical proposals.
What you bring to the role
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace or industrial engineering or the physical sciences from an accredited college or university or its equivalent and usually a minimum of eight (8) years relevant work experience.
- Experience with Solidworks, and or CREO, Windchill PLM or other Product Life Cycle Management (PLM systems), Thermal simulation, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Design For Manufacture (DFM) or Design For Excellence (DFX), Earned Value, Design for Cost, Time management, ECN’s or Engineering Change Orders (ECO).
- Demonstrated experience in design to standards for mechanical shock, vibration, humidity/dust ingress
- Demonstrated experience in design to RF and thermal standards
- Demonstrated experience in design for manufacture/assembly/test and root cause analysis
- Demonstrated experience with finite element analysis tools for mechanical analysis
- Demonstrated experience with computational flow analysis tools
