Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

The College of Health Sciences (CHS) Office of Research is seeking a Data Analyst (Data & REDCap Support) to turn complex research data into clear, useful insights for college leadership and more than 800 researchers.

In this 1-year, full-time term role, you will:

  • Design and maintain data pipelines and dashboards that highlight research strengths, funding trends, and opportunities.
  • Provide front-line REDCap support so researchers can confidently design, manage, and analyze their study data.
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean (Research) and a small, collaborative team that actively experiments with AI, LLMs, and advanced analytics to support research excellence.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both deep technical work (coding, data wrangling, automation) and helping people (supporting busy, sometimes stressed researchers with patience and clarity).

The College of Health Sciences unites the University of Alberta’s health-focused faculties and schools to enable a new level of interdisciplinary research and teaching that advances human health and wellness across individual, community, and global contexts. By fostering collaboration across disciplines, the college supports innovative, large-scale research initiatives and integrated educational programs that span the full continuum of care and health promotion.

The college includes the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Public Health, and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Together, these units drive excellence in health sciences education, research, and clinical innovation, supporting the university’s broader mission to lead in discovery, learning, and the advancement of societal well-being for the decade ahead and beyond.

  • Build and maintain interactive dashboards (e.g., in Tableau or similar) to visualize publications, collaborations, funding, and other key research metrics.

  • Design, script, and maintain ETL workflows in R and/or Python to combine data from multiple systems (e.g., internal data warehouses, ORCiD, bibliometric databases).

  • Help define and routinely report on core research KPIs for the College of Health Sciences.

  • Explore and, where appropriate, implement LLM / GPT and machine learning tools (e.g., for keyword extraction, text classification, summarization) to enhance reporting.

  • Serve as the primary contact for REDCap questions within CHS, including project setup, form and survey design, user access, and day-to-day troubleshooting.

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation, SOPs, and brief user guides for dashboards, REDCap support, and data processes.

  • Manage multiple concurrent requests and projects, working with your supervisor to prioritize while working independently day-to-day.

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, health research, epidemiology, or a closely related discipline).

  • At least 2 years of directly related experience in data analysis, research analytics, or a similar role (a comparable mix of education and experience may be considered).

  • Experience with REDCap (or similar research/clinical data capture platforms), including hands-on project setup and user support.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in R or Python for data cleaning, transformation, scripting, and automation.

  • Experience building data visualizations and dashboards using tools such as Tableau (preferred), Power BI, or similar platforms.

  • Experience working with large or complex datasets from multiple sources.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Proven ability to organize work, juggle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated commitment to respectful, service-oriented support, especially when working with individuals facing tight timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science, health research, epidemiology).
  • Experience with or strong interest in machine learning and/or LLM / GPT APIs as part of practical data workflows.
  • Familiarity with academic research environments, research metrics, and bibliometric tools (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus, ORCiD).
  • Experience providing help desk or front-line technical support.
