We are accepting applications for up to two Wastewater Operator Students to join our Wastewater Services team for a four-month term beginning in May, with the possibility of extension up to eight months. This position is a learning and support role assisting with the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre, pump stations and other related equipment and facilities. Reporting to the Manager of Wastewater Services and taking direction from the Senior Operator, Wastewater Treatment Facilities, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
Assisting Senior Operators with the installation, operation and maintenance of pumps, generators, motors, instrumentation, heavy equipment and other wastewater equipment and structures;
Collecting and reporting data from instrumentation and alarms, diagnosing routine operational problems and taking appropriate remedial action under direction;
Assisting trades personnel with repair work;
Performing various laboratory tests, recording and maintaining information;
Assisting with the unloading, storage, and transfer of bulk and packaged chemicals;
Performing a variety of general housekeeping duties such as painting, cleaning and landscape maintenance;
Testing, calibrating, maintaining and repairing equipment;
Receiving enquiries over the phone and providing general information;
Operating trucks and mobile equipment.
Our ideal candidate is:
Currently enrolled in a University or Technical College Program in a related discipline (ie. Water Engineering Technology);
Mechanically inclined with some knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools and equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of plant processes and equipment;
Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude;
Enthusiastic and eager to learn;
Certified in First Aid (Level 1), WHMIS and confined space entry;
Creative with the ability to analyze and troubleshoot various problems;
Safety-conscious with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.
A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license is required for this role. Successful candidates will be required to consent to a Canadian Criminal Record Check.
NOTE: applicants must be returning to an educational institution upon completion of employment to be eligible for this opportunity.
