About the role

This position is a maternity leave coverage and has an end date of June 30, 2027, with a possibility for extension of up to 6 months, based on operational need and funding.

**Location -**This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

About Amii Interested in supporting cutting-edge AI research behind the scenes? The Amii UofA team is hiring a Team Lead, Finance & Administration (maternity leave coverage) to manage financial operations and administrative process at the University of Alberta, Computing Science department. In this role, you will support a growing community of researchers and innovators advancing artificial intelligence in Alberta.

The Opportunity We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional with strong problem-solving skills and advanced Excel expertise to join our team during a scheduled maternity leave. This Auxiliary Salaried position offers a structured temporary appointment with university benefits in accordance with U of A policies and collective agreements. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring continuity of operations, supporting team objectives, and maintaining a high standard of administrative and financial excellence during this transition.

The Faculty of Science is internationally recognized for excellence in research and education. Through pioneering discovery and innovation, the faculty addresses global challenges across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computing science, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. Its work positions the university at the forefront of technological, environmental, and scientific advancement.

  • Provide financial leadership and advice to the Amii Director and stakeholders.

  • Oversee complex research accounts with multiple funding sources, ensuring accurate reporting, compliance, and timely financial analysis while proactively identifying and mitigating financial risks.

  • Recommend budget allocation strategies and support resource planning to advance the Centre’s priorities.

  • Act as the primary financial liaison between the Department of Computing Science and Amii Leadership (Amii CFO & Director of Government Relations & Affairs); reconcile the University’s administrative requirements with Amii’s strategic funding priorities through proactive communication and integrated reporting

  • Ensure all activities comply with the granting agencies’ requirements and University policies.

  • Lead and oversee the Amii administrative team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

  • Plan and delegate work, ensuring staff have the resources, information, and time needed to manage shifting priorities effectively.

  • Anticipate stakeholder needs and identify opportunities to improve processes and services.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business, Finance, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • 8+ years of progressively responsible financial and administrative experience, preferably within a post-secondary environment.

  • Demonstrated expertise in financial statement reconciliation, accounting analysis, and related financial procedures.

  • Experience providing budget oversight and financial advisory support to stakeholders.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, complex formulas, and data analysis within a Windows environment.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate discrepancies and develop effective solutions.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, service-oriented approach.

  • Proven experience leading and overseeing team operations.

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience using PeopleSoft Financials and HCM systems.
  • Experience with University of Alberta processes, and/or navigating complex matrix reporting structures, ideally involving university-industry partnerships or large-scale research institutes.
  • Knowledge Transfer Management: Demonstrated ability to quickly gain complex institutional knowledge and document processes to ensure continuity when the permanent incumbent returns.
  • Change Management: Experience leading a team through a period of transition or temporary leadership without a drop in morale or productivity.
