General Accountability:
Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Safety Codes Assistant provides services associated with the building, gas, plumbing, electrical, and private sewage safety codes permits legislated under the Safety Codes Act. A large focus of this role is providing superior customer service to internal and external customers, including applicants, government agencies, developers and the general public, in alignment with the Town’s cultural pillars of Accountability, Excellence and Connection.

The employee in this position must be able to communicate clearly, concisely and actively contribute to achieving team results. The incumbent must provide exceptional service to customers and internal partners and demonstrate initiative toward achieving organizational results and performance excellence.
Duties:
- Provide accurate information to applicants on permit applications and processes as described under the Safety Codes Act and Permit Regulations.
- Ensure permit applications (gas, plumbing, electrical, private sewage) meet the requirements of the Permit Regulations, and the Safety Codes Act.
- Issue gas, plumbing, electrical, private sewage, and building permits.
- Review plans, engineering, permit documents, and other pertinent information in order to verity accuracy and completeness of building permit applications.
- Responsible for scheduling all inspections related to gas, plumbing, electrical, private sewage, and building disciplines and advising Safety Codes Officers accordingly.
- Input of site inspection reports into database and monitoring of compliance. Provide site inspection reports to contractors and issue PSRs (Permit Services Reports upon compliance and closing permits) as described in the Town’s Quality Management Plan and Permit Regulations.
- Monitoring of permitting records and files as described in the Town’s Quality Management Plan and Permit Regulations.
- Prepare and reconcile Safety Codes Council monthly levies account transaction reports related to building, gas, plumbing, private sewage and electrical permits.
- Respond to client inquiries by telephone, in person, or by email.
- Collect permit fees for payments associated with Safety Codes permits. Ensure accuracy of the Safety Codes Council levies.
- Provide backup coverage for the Manager, Engineering as needed.
- Provide backup coverage of the Town Hall front desk as needed for breaks, absences and/or vacation.
- Assist Manager, Engineering in the preparation of the yearly scheduled Safety Codes Council audits (internal and external).
- FOIP research projects assigned.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 Diploma or GED equivalent
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an office administration role
- The ability to complete the following Safety Codes Council courses:
- Permit Issuer
- Introduction to the Safety Codes System in Alberta
- Building Administration and Compliance Monitoring
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrate exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
- Familiar with the Town’s Safety Codes Quality Management Plan and a commitment to abide by its rules
- Proficient in reading construction blueprints and related construction documents
- Knowledge of construction plans, construction terminology, construction practices
- Competent in reviewing plans and applications for completeness and compliance with permit regulation processes
- Familiar with legal land descriptions
- Possess ability to adhere to deadlines and manage changing priorities
This position will remain opened until filled, with the first review date being February 11, 2026.

Pay: From $33.03 per hour
