Nature of Position: Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week)

What You’ll Do

The Yard Shunter / Class 1 Truck Driver is responsible for organizing and moving trailers within the Nanaimo yard and Duke Point facility to support efficient loading, unloading, and dispatch operations.

This role involves shunting 53-foot trailers, consolidating dunnage from trailers, maintaining an organized yard environment, assisting with trailer preparation, and supporting yard logistics including dunnage handling and equipment checks. The position may also require occasional local deliveries within the Nanaimo area.

The successful candidate will possess a valid Class 1 driver’s license, experience operating heavy equipment and trailers, experience operating a forklift, have experience with light mechanical repairs, and demonstrate strong awareness of yard safety and operational efficiency.

You will:

  • Shunt and organize 53-foot trailers within the Nanaimo yard and Seaspan Duke Point facility.
  • Operate a forklift to offload and reload materials, dunnage, or equipment into trailers.
  • Maintain clear and organized truck and trailer parking within the yard.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment.
  • Conduct routine yard inventory checks and assist with asset tracking.
  • Sweep and clean trailers as required to ensure trailers are ready for loading.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized yard environment.
  • Inspect trailers for mechanical issues and complete minor repairs when possible.
  • Report equipment defects, safety hazards, or maintenance concerns.
  • Assist dispatch and yard staff with coordinating trailer movements.
  • Occasionally complete local deliveries or equipment transfers within the Nanaimo area.
  • Comply with all transportation regulations, yard safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Maintain required documentation including inspection reports and logs.
  • Perform other duties as required to support operational needs

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • Valid Class 1 Driver’s License
  • Minimum 1 year experience operating tractor-trailers
  • Forklift certification or demonstrated forklift experience
  • Ability to maneuver 53-foot trailers in tight yard environments
  • Strong understanding of yard safety procedures and safe equipment operation
  • Basic mechanical aptitude with ability to identify and repair minor equipment defects
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Experience working in trucking yards or distribution facilities an asset
  • Experience performing light equipment repairs or maintenance an asset
