About the role

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm (37.5 hours per week)

Reports To: Manager, Housing First

The Housing First program, funded by Homeward Trust and the Government of Alberta, is a twelve-month intensive case management program targeted towards individuals and families experiencing chronic homelessness and have multiple barriers to permanent housing.

Reporting to Housing First Program Manager, the Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting the day-to-day activities of the Follow-Up Support Workers and Housing Outreach Workers. In collaboration with the Housing First Program Manager, Landlords, and relevant partner agencies, the Assistant Manager ensures the effective coordination of services for participants who have been housed through the program.

Position Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Provide day to day support and guidance to all staff members within the program.
  • Support the Follow-Up Support Workers with case review and ensure required documentation is completed.
  • Support in day-to-day case management and problem solving.
  • Support the professional development of staff through training, coaching, and mentorship opportunities.
  • Participate in hiring processes while also providing ongoing support and supervision for the Housing First Team and/or students.
  • Assist in onboarding, training, and collaboration with new and current employees.
  • Assist Housing First Manager in monthly supervisions and performance plans.
  • Assist the Housing First Manager with facilitating weekly case review meetings, team reflections, team building events, etc.

Frontline Work

  • Provide support by covering caseloads for other staff members, as needed - particularly in emergency situations.
  • Build rapport with individuals, couples and families that are referred to the program.
  • Support the team with case management and assessment to ensure required documentation is collected and completed.
  • Maintain, delegate, and balance staff caseloads, responsibilities, and privileges.
  • Assist Housing First Manager in reviewing and coordinating external program referrals or transfers and assigning them to appropriate support workers.
  • Attend all external and internal transfer meetings to ensure full understanding of the program for both participants and employees.

Operations and Administration

  • Attend meetings in supervisors’ absence, representing the program.
  • Engage in internal operational discussions and decision-making processes to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the program.
  • Work with the Housing First Manager and colleagues to ensure all contractual obligations and practice standards are met.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of program policies, procedures, and training materials as required.
  • Assist Housing First Manager to ensure Rental Assistance Payment requests are submitted by staff to the funder in a timely manner.
  • Assist Housing First Manager at ensuring that sitoskam iyiniwatisiwin (Indigenous way of knowing) is being implemented within the Housing First Program.

Other

  • Perform all other duties as outlined by program manager.
  • BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in social services or related field. Candidates without a degree but extensive relevant experience will also be considered.
  • 2 years' experience in human services required. Previous experience in inner city housing programs is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Landlord and Tenancy Act and Alberta Health Regulations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and addiction.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and conversations with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous history within culture, willingness to incorporate Indigenous cultural values in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated competency in the development and administration of multifaceted complex budgets.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, ever changing often demanding environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to us an equitable and inclusive lens through all planning and decision making.
  • Non-judgmental, empathetic, and enthusiastic mind-set.
  • Ability to lead and delegate while modelling a positive work-place culture.
  • Training in de-escalation is an asset.
  • Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable personal vehicle with $2,000,000 liability insurance.
  • Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course
  • Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
  • Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
  • Experience with and knowledge of Indigenous culture and ceremonies is considered an asset.
