Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial duties which ensure The Salvation Army Simcoe Community Church is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Service Responsibilities
- Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit.
- Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied.
- Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness at all times
- Clean, sterilize, and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required.
- Replenish supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items.
- Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles, and checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required. Following the established procedures and record keeping for inventory tracking.
- May be required to set up and tear down for social events.
- Comply with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.
- Perform minor repairs that do not require certification such as patching, painting, replacing light bulbs and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues).
- Identify/Report all safety concerns and major repair issues that will require an external service provider to supervisor
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up, up-keep of storage shed, and watering of plants etc.
- Always maintain the security of property.
Health and Safety
- Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, customers, and clients (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building,
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
- Performs monthly workplace health & safety inspections.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other position related duties as required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent part-time position based on 12 hours per week.
- Additional hours may be required based on business needs. Flexibility is required.
- The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 39 pounds with no assistance from others.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and designated properties.
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
Normal Hours of Work and Work Schedule: Schedule may vary according to operational requirements; flexibility is required. The supervisor will set the work schedule in consultation with the incumbent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of High School.
- Current WHMIS certificate or willingness to obtain
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with professional cleaning and maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
- Exhibit good listening and interpersonal skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
