Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the Senior
Mechanical Designer will report to the Engineering Manager. The Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible for modifying, enhancing, and creating established standard & custom designs and parts for products.
Essential Responsibilities
- Design custom/semi-custom product assemblies to meet customer mechanical specification.
- Contribute to the proposal and creation of work instructions.
- Design most jobs for more than one product, switchgear or MCC.
- Develop drawings to support assembly.
- Assist Mechanical Engineering efforts in product development process.
- Complete complex design jobs independently.
- Assist and help solve problems with other engineering personnel.
- Work with the fabrication team to assist in solving shop fabrication problems.
- Attend in-house and outside training sessions as required.
- Strive to keep current on the “state of the art” in design specialty through periodicals, trade magazines, and continuing education.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Core Competencies
- Advanced drafting/CAD skills.
- Proficient in use of Oracle, Word, Excel.
- Thorough understanding of power systems.
- Working knowledge of electrical design.
- In-depth knowledge of company policies and procedures, work instructions, ISO policies.
- In-depth knowledge of company safety rules and regulations.
- In-depth knowledge of vendor products used in assemblies.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.
- Ability to order materials electronically.
- Familiarity with strengths of materials, steel and copper.
- Ability to apply (informed by others what is required, and which code) ANSI, CEC, and other standards.
- Strong communication, organizational and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.
Qualifications
- Two (2) year diploma program in Electrical, Mechanical Technology or in a related area.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an Engineering/Designing role; CET is an asset.
Work Authorization: This is a permanent position. Applicants must be legally
authorized to work in Canada at the time of hire. Immigration sponsorship is not typically available and will be considered only where supported by business needs and applicable legal requirements.
Working Conditions
- Temperature controlled working environment.
- Must wear personnel protective equipment at all times (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses as required) and respirators when required.
- Must be able to work from all types of ladders (step ladders, "A" frame ladders, and all-size extension ladders).
- Job requires working in an office/shop setting.
- Working in front of a computer for the majority of the shift.
Physical Requirements
- Maintaining body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.
- Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner.
- Standing, walking, and speaking for long periods of time.
- Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force up to 20 lbs.
- Typing, punching or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
- Perceiving size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with the fingertips.
