Position Summary
The Senior Government Affairs and Public Policy Officer (British Columbia) is a leadership role within NCCM’s Government Affairs team, responsible for shaping and advancing NCCM’s public policy agenda at federal, provincial, and municipal levels in the Province of British Columbia. The Senior Officer will lead government relations strategies, provide high-level policy analysis, and represent NCCM in engagements with government officials, policymakers, and community leaders. Working closely with senior leadership, this role is integral to driving systemic change, combating Islamophobia, and advocating for equity and justice for Canadian Muslims.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
– Develop and implement NCCM’s government relations and public policy strategies in British Columbia in alignment with organizational goals.
– Serve as a key advisor to the senior leadership team on legislative and policy matters.
– Lead on the identification of emerging public policy issues and proactively develop NCCM’s positions.
Government Relations and Advocacy
– Build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with MPs, MPPs/MLAs, municipal councillors, and other government officials in British Columbia.
– Act as NCCM’s lead representative at high-level meetings, consultations, and public forums.
– Oversee the creation and delivery of policy briefs, submissions, and advocacy materials to advance NCCM’s policy priorities.
– Facilitate channels for government officials to engage with Muslim communities and address key concerns.
Policy Development and Analysis
– Lead research and analysis on complex policy issues, ensuring NCCM’s positions are evidence-based and impactful.
– Draft and oversee the development of detailed policy reports, white papers, and advocacy documents.
– Coordinate internal reviews of government relations activities to measure effectiveness and refine strategies.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
– Collaborate with NCCM’s Community Engagement team to mobilize grassroots advocacy efforts and connect community members with national initiatives.
– Build partnerships with civil society organizations, coalitions, and allies to amplify shared policy goals.
– Represent NCCM at events, conferences, and community forums to advance public education on policy issues.
Mentorship and Oversight
– Supervise and mentor the Government Affairs and Public Policy Officer, providing guidance on projects and professional development.
– Provide strategic oversight on advocacy campaigns and public policy initiatives.
Qualifications
– Minimum 7–10 years of experience in government relations, public policy, parliamentary affairs, political offices, public service, advocacy, or related fields.
– Extensive knowledge of the federal government, Parliament of Canada, cabinet processes, and federal policy development.
– Demonstrated experience engaging with elected officials, senior public servants, and national stakeholders.
– Exceptional policy analysis, research, and writing skills.
– Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes.
– Outstanding interpersonal, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
– Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
– Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced advocacy environment.
– Commitment to advancing human rights, equity, and justice, with an understanding of issues affecting Canadian Muslim communities.
– Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a significant asset.
– Ability to travel periodically across Canada as required
