The Coordinator, Recreation and Culture shall assist the Supervisor, Recreation and Culture with the planning, development, implementation, promotion and evaluation of all Recreation and Culture Programs and Services affiliated with the Municipality and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture.

The Coordinator will oversee 55+ programs and services based on community interest, trends and budget requirements; administration and supervision of the recreation programming for assigned area of specialization. The Coordinator will be the primary liaison for committees under their assigned portfolio and will ensure programs and services are delivered according to the High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development and Healthy Ageing.

Compensation
35 hours per week; $57,174 - $66,885 per annum

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma in Recreation, Community Development, Child and Youth Worker, Human Services or Gerontology
  • Two (2) to three (3) years on the job training and/or previous work experience in the area of specialization (ie. Child and youth recreation programming, camps, inclusion, 55+ member services or programs).
  • One (1) or two (2) years related experience supervising in a municipal environment
  • Standard first aid and CPR
  • High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development
  • High Five Principles of Healthy Aging
  • Certification with High Five PHCD Trainer, High Five Quest 2, Behaviour Management Systems
  • Specialized teaching, coaching or instructing in at least one area of specialization (ie. Group exercise, Older Adult Fitness Instructor Certification, youth coaching/instructing

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Coordinators and Supervisors, develop indoor and outdoor programs (short and long term) for the Municipality of Port Hope recreational facilities identifying the types of programs, lesson plans and special events
  • Assist with the implementation of programs for the Municipality including the review and evaluation of lesson plans and provision of feedback to and from staff, volunteers, participants, members, Council and Committees regarding objectives and purpose of individual programs and services.
  • Develop, revise and continually monitor programming to ensure inclusive, innovative and equitable programming for all; foster partnerships to support the development of programming to meet community needs
  • Advocate for the needs of participants and members as required through input concerning budget, grants and the delivery of services
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards and/or guidelines associated with the delivery of leisure programming (ie. High Five/NCCP/Youth Friendly/Age Friendly); through standardized evaluations and ensuring recommendations are conducted and implemented as required to ensure the highest quality of programming
  • Assist with the recruitment, leading, managing and mentoring of part time staff, students and volunteers; including assistance with hiring, coaching, performance management, scheduling, and staff training; ensuring training/onboarding and certification requirements are met and maintained, development and review of staff training manuals. Initiate disciplinary actions with Supervisor and contribute to the delivery of the outcome
  • Assist with administrative support of programming including ensuring budgets are maintained, make recommendations for future budget years, ordering and tracking of supplies required for programming and/or grants, coordinating dates, times and logistics of special events and/or workshops, communicating with departmental staff as required to support programs, collaborate in the development of promotional materials
  • Oversee recreation facilities as required by programming, provide supervision of programming and coverage of facilities, including evenings, weekends and holidays as determined by programming needs
  • While working, ensure customer service support, risk management to ensure publics safe use of facilities; be the primary contact outside of regular operating hours for staff and patrons; respond to incidents and/or assist with response; coordinate facility closures as required in consultation with the Supervisor; document and follow up with customer service or patron incidents; assist when required to secure shift and front desk coverage; liaise with user groups/patrons as needed
  • Adhere to high standards of ethical behaviour and demonstrate their understanding that personal actions impact the public’s perception of the Municipality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or designate.

  • Office environment in Recreational Facility with frequent interruptions.
  • Requirement to lift objects and complete program and rental set-ups and take downs.
  • Limited travel to outside work locations may be required.
  • Regular evening and weekend shifts are required as well as occasional work on statutory holidays
