About the role

Who you are

  • You’ll thrive at Float if you:
  • Put customers first, especially when trust and money are involved
  • Act like an owner and take responsibility for outcomes
  • Stay calm and decisive under pressure
  • Balance speed with correctness
  • Lead with clarity, humility, and technical credibility
  • In addition, you bring:
  • 12–20+ years of engineering experience, including senior technical leadership
  • Deep experience with distributed systems and correctness-critical workflows
  • Experience with payments, banking, ledgering, or financial infrastructure (preferred)
  • Strong backend engineering skills (Python a plus)
  • Comfort pushing code in systems that move real money
  • Experience leading senior engineers in high-trust environments
  • Startup or growth-stage experience
  • At Float, you’ll thrive if you’re bold, curious, and eager to make a real impact. We're building something special—and having a lot of fun along the way. If you’re excited to build, grow, and win together, we’d love to meet you

What the job involves

  • We’re hiring an Engineering Manager for Financial Infrastructure & Banking to lead one of Float’s most correctness-critical engineering domains
  • This team owns systems that move money, manage banking integrations, maintain ledger correctness, and ensure Float can safely scale financial operations
  • The blast radius is high — mistakes here directly impact customer trust, funds, and regulatory posture — which is why this role requires exceptional technical judgment and seniority
  • This is a player-coach role. You’ll spend roughly 60% of your time hands-on in the codebase and systems, and 40% leading and developing engineers, partnering closely with Product and Risk
  • If you’re energized by high-stakes systems, deep technical ownership, and leading senior engineers in complex environments — this role is for you
  • Lead Correctness-Critical Financial Systems
  • Own systems related to money movement, banking rails, ledgering, reconciliation, and financial operations
  • Ensure correctness, reliability, and safety across all financial workflows
  • Make sound architectural and delivery decisions under regulatory and commercial constraints
  • Hands-On Technical Leadership (60%)
  • Contribute directly to backend and infrastructure code
  • Review designs and PRs for correctness, reliability, and scalability
  • Debug complex production issues and lead incident response when required
  • People Leadership & Team Health (40%)
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of senior engineers
  • Build trust quickly with highly experienced ICs
  • Establish strong operating rhythms, clarity, and accountability
  • Roadmap & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Partner with Product to run dual-track roadmaps (commercial commitments + technical foundations)
  • Work closely with Risk, Compliance, and Platform teams
  • Communicate risk and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders

Benefits

  • Competitive coverage of medical, dental and vision insurance for employees
  • Education & learning stipend for personal growth and development
  • Flexible vacation time
  • Work from home stipend to help you succeed in a remote environment
