Job Description A Legal Coordinator 1 assists the Area Legal Counsel ('ALC') in providing strategic legal advice to Church leaders and officers and in managing the delivery of legal services to the Church. The work of the Legal Coordinator 1 is ultimately a spiritual work, assisting to accomplish the mission of the Church.
Responsibilities A Legal Coordinator 1 provides the ALC with managerial and administrative support. A Legal Coordinator 1 may have responsibility for certain matters assigned by the ALC, such as:
- coordinating documentation for real estate acquisitions and leases, construction projects, risk management matters, human resource issues and other legal matters;
- managing powers of attorney and other agency appointing documents;
- coordinating legal entity compliance, including periodic reporting and maintenance requirements;
- coordinating assignments to and monitoring responses from outside counsel;
- coordinating review and payment of outside counsel invoices;
- general contract administration;
- coordinating matters database administration;
- assisting with budget management;
- coordinating project assignments;
- assisting ALC in ensuring compliance with Church policies across all departments, including training Church managers and outside counsel on legal policy and procedures;
- assisting ALC in carrying out government relations responsibilities; and
- other administrative functions.
As assigned by the ALC, a Legal Coordinator 1 may have interactions with outside counsel, Area Office personnel, ecclesiastical leaders and other Church officers, governmental agencies, and the Office of General Counsel at headquarters. A Legal Coordinator 1 DOES NOT engage in the practice of law or provide legal advice.
Qualifications Requires a bachelor's degree (or equivalent in the host nation) and five years of management or administrative experience (law related experience is preferred).
Must Have
- excellent oral and written communication skills, both in English and in the language of the host nation
- ability to understand, analyze and describe complex issues and explain them to others;
- ability to identify and solve problems; and
- strong Church experience, including faithful service in Church callings.
A thorough knowledge of the Church's temporal organization and Church policies and procedures is preferred, as the responsibilities require the ability to explain Church procedures and practices to persons not familiar with Church operations and work effectively with temporal affairs personnel.
Must have a strong commitment to the mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and be willing to work cooperatively with others to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Church.
Must: maintain strict confidentiality; exercise a high degree of tact and discretion; prioritize and meet deadlines; demonstrate a high level of initiative, spiritual maturity, leadership and training ability; manage multiple tasks simultaneously with little supervision; exemplify Church standards and teachings; be proficient in the use of personal computers and basic applications (i.e., Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet research; and be service oriented and personable.
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada.
