The Senior Data Specialist with the Data Services Unit will be responsible for defining and implementing the standards, procedures, models, and technologies used in collecting, organizing, transforming, storing, and accessing data within the Calgary Police Service (CPS). Primary duties include:

  • Work with Subject Matter Experts to identify and understand business requirements and data needs.
  • Collaborate with partners both internal and external to the organization to build an expert understanding of the diverse data sources and needs, and to bring data into the organization while ensuring compliance with the applicable legislation and internal policy.
  • Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of data storage solutions and data processing workflows.
  • Maintain stable and scalable data pipelines that cleanse, structure, and integrate different data sets into a readable and accessible format for end-user facing reports, data sciences, and ad-hoc analyses.
  • Develop data quality automated tests, monitor and maintain data warehouse security models and manage the security of the data infrastructure, including access controls, and encryption.
  • Design and create data models that enrich the analytical data sources for further usability and availability.
  • Implement new or modify existing software using third party and open-source programming languages to interface with vendors¿ solutions.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies in the big data management.
  • Review project objectives and determine best technology for implementation.
  • Prepare time and cost estimates and establish schedules for the completion of tasks and projects.

Qualifications

  • A technical diploma equivalent to 2 years of full-time study in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field and a minimum of 8 years of progressive Information Technology (IT); OR
  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of progressive Information Technology (IT).
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in data engineering or data solution architecture is required.
  • Experience in the analysis, design, and implementation of software systems in a medium to large data center is required.
  • Proficiency with REST API, Microsoft C#, Python, Java, PowerShell and open-source libraries on Windows or Linux environments is also required.
  • Experience using Azure Data Factory, Data Bricks, configuring and deploying Azure services is an asset.
  • Knowledge in Niche Police Records Management System, Law Enforcement Computer Aided Dispatch Systems, and geospatial data is preferred.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • An enhanced security clearance and pre-employment polygraph will be conducted.
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Position Type: 1 Temporary (up to 8 months)

Location: 5111 47 Street N.E.

Compensation: Pay Grade 12 $48.54 - 64.88 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day

work week with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
