STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time with benefits
SHIFT: 35 hours per week
LOCATION: Provincial Office in Vancouver, BC - Hybrid (2 days per week at the office)

As a Senior Officer, Foundations & Grants at the BC SPCA you’ll be joining one of the most innovative and successful fundraising teams in Canada. The BC SPCA is funded by compassionate animal lovers who helped us assist over 119,000 animals last year. Your work will help make all of this possible. As a Senior Officer, Foundations & Grants you will focus on developing and maintaining relationships with granting organizations.

The role of Senior Officer, Foundations & Grants
As part of the Major Giving team, led by the Manager, Major Giving you’ll contribute to the strategy development and execution of an annual fund development plan.
You’re responsible for securing annual funding from granting organizations by:
Identifying new potential funding prospects
Writing and submitting compelling grant applications
Stewarding relationships with granting organizations
You’ll be collaborating with the Major Giving team and other BC SPCA departments to identify funding needs, articulate projects and build budgets to support funding requests.
You’ll be working directly with Foundations and other granting organizations.
You are expected to utilize appropriate measures and metrics to evaluate the success of your program area and provide regular reporting as required.
You are supported and encouraged to develop and maintain relationships with industry peers and maintain a commitment to continued education, learning and innovation.
You are responsible for other fund development duties as required.
While every day is different, a day in this role might include:
Identifying new potential funders for a new initiative to support our Cruelty Investigations work.
Collaborate with a Community Animal Centre Manager on Vancouver Island on a community specific funding application in support of a capital project.
Meet with Donor Advised Fund advisors and foundation representatives to cultivate relationships and explore funding opportunities
Gather stories and teacher testimonials from our Humane Education colleagues to meet the reporting requirements for a successful grant application.

What skills have you developed?
University degree in relevant discipline plus 5 - 8 years of experience in fundraising with specialization in grant writing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer.
You can demonstrate an understanding of big picture fundraising and how support from Foundations fits in.
You have an in-depth knowledge and experience of grant writing, best practices, trends and opportunities.
You are a clear and persuasive communicator, both written and oral.
You know when something is your responsibility and when you have to escalate something. If you don’t know, you’ll ask for help.
When you see a problem or an opportunity to make something better you bring forward solutions.
You’re great at information gathering: determining what you’ll need, sourcing it, analyzing, distilling and reporting back.
You are comfortable using data: establishing data points, accurate record keeping, collecting data, using data to support initiatives, and to demonstrate success, need or areas of concern.
You know at least one CRM well and are open to learning others (we use Raisers Edge).
You have experience using a graphic design program and are open to learning others (we use Adobe and Canva).
You are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have a good sense of the tricks and processes for mail merge, formulas, styles templates, etc. (and are eager to learn when you don’t!)
You are able to thrive in an open concept and fast-paced work environment

The BC SPCA compensation structure is based on external benchmarks and regularly reviewed. The BC SPCA is the only animal welfare organization in B.C. with the authority to enforce animal cruelty laws under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA Act). We are the largest animal welfare organization of our kind in North America and the largest animal sheltering society in the world. We have 44 locations across B.C. including:
