About the role

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones, and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com.

Position Overview:

As a member of the Physics team, the Computational Analyst will run and help develop models of the magnetized plasma dynamics. The focus of this position is analysis of experimental data using models and simulation tools to understand the behavior of magnetized plasma in General Fusion’s experimental systems such as LM26. The candidate will analyze data using existing and purpose-built codes and reconcile the results with expected plasma behavior, and further the team’s understanding with presentations and written reports.

A desire to dig and develop deep understanding of data and results, coupled with the ability to proactively communicate progress and incorporate continuous feedback will be the key to success in this role.

The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of their results, including their fidelity, accuracy, and communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Simulating magnetized plasma with existing codes.
  • Working with the science team to assist in developing and testing new models of plasma and machine behavior.
  • Taking ownership of the modeling results, ensuring that they meet the needs, in both fidelity and confidence, of the science and engineering teams.
  • Reconciling model results with experimental physical results and using them to improve the fidelity of the models.
  • Evaluating new techniques, software, and computer resources.
  • Developing and maintaining data processing tools to visualize data and to pipe data between simulation tools and General Fusion’s data processing and storage infrastructure (Aurora).

Relevant Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Masters Degre or equivalent in physics, fluid dynamics, computer science or a closely related field.

  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience, including experience simulating dynamic or static electromagnetic systems with diverse boundary conditions.

  • Strong programming skills and a willingness to learn new methods.

  • Proven fluency in Python and MATLAB.

  • Fluency in Bash, and comfort in a command line Linux environment.

  • Strong background in physics with emphasis on electromagnetics.

  • A positive attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience writing code for HPC (parallel machines).
  • Computational research experience in plasma physics or magnetohydrodynamics.
  • Familiarity with existing magnetized plasma or magnetically confined thermonuclear fusion experimental analysis codes, such as: EFIT, NIMROD, UEDGE, M3D-C1, FLASH, EIRENE.

The typical hiring range for this position is $112,000CAD - $137,000CAD. General Fusion considers several factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills, and experience, proficiency, job location, and internal equity.

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills, and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

What We Offer:

  • Flexible hours
  • Four weeks’ vacation
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • RRSP contribution
  • Support for professional development
  • Great company culture – social events, food trucks, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.

Applications:

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

General Fusion is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
